Getting Rich Paul as representation complicates things.

https://www.nytimes.com/athletic/live-blogs/nba-free-agency-live-tracker-updates-deals/4V28798D4yCU/Oy3zEHTcxo0s/

"On Sunday morning, one Mavericks source had shared optimism that this strange scenario, never before encountered, could have resolution as soon as Sunday. Jones could still negotiate his next contract through Turner, the president of Verus Management, who has represented him since entering the league. Jones and Turner could also reach a mutual agreement to waive the contractual waiting period, allowing Klutch to take him on as a client sooner.

But Jones, as of now, will not be represented by either party when free agency begins and will not immediately continue negotiations with the Mavericks, who have been allowed to negotiate with him since the Finals ended. For the first time, it casts doubt upon the likelihood he’ll return to Dallas, league sources say, which had previously been seen as a mutually desired scenario."

I like Nico doing this with swift conviction.

There was a time before that Donnie would take his time at a Dallas steakhouse and sit on his hands until the free agent pool has dried up. Now that a real pro like Nico is calling the shots, we're doing things at a faster pace. If one angle is shut, then we move forward with another. No use waiting around 2 weeks.

Agreed plus potentially I think they feel Naji is a better option and cheaper. Let’s see what else we do.

40.7% on open threes
39.2% on catch and shoot threes
42% on corner threes

That's all that matters. For a team that shot 17% in the finals, this is always a plus.

Welcome! Wanted him for a while now.

Hate to lose DJJ, but Mavs could I'll afford to wait. Now see if you can turn Green into a more reliable backup PG who can also score, successful offseason

Naji can actually comfortably put the ball on the floor, which means after a pump fake it’s on.

Also has a very quick release. I think the Mavs were gonna stay loyal but jumped at the chance of switching to a player who they believe will perform better.

He’ll open up the floor way more than Jones. Especially if we get Thompson too.

Can’t wait another 13 days to see if DJJ signs with Dallas. Signing with a new agent just before the free agency period doesn’t seem like sound judgment to me. Marshall is better on offense and slightly worse on defense. I think Nico did a great pivot here. He is about $5 million cheaper than we were looking to pay DJJ too. I like this signing.

but if DJJ can be kept by 3 years 30M deal, would rather re-sign DJJ instead

One thing Marshall brings that the Mavs didn't have is that he's a mean dog, he doesn't back down to anyone, and is tough as nails.
He's not the athlete DJJ is, but he is a better shooter.
PJ will have to replace DJJ and the 2nd lob option offensively and cut more, Mavs lost some foot speed and screen navigation, on offense they lost some fast break options, but they gained in shooting and toughness.
Loved DJJ, wanted him to stay, but I think we'll be fine, and I think Marshall will become a fan favorite.
Defense wins draft lotteries!

If Nico wanted Naji so i'm ok with that sign, we are the NBA Finals and we can't waste time to wait DJJ decision... He played his best NBA career because Luka and the Mavs.

So ok, if he wants money then a lot of teams will pay him but forget to come back to the Finals my friend.

I don't know literally nothing about Naji, can he put the ball on the floor? Can he share the rock? And about defense?

I agree. You cant wait 2 weeks for DJJ. It's a minor role. What Dallas needs now is for Klay to agree.

Yes Mavs (Nico) chose to not wait him 15days and sign Marshall now for others trade.

Well well it's all clear, probably DJJ would have wanted to come back like most of us said.

However both Marshall and Grimes are supposed to be bench player so we miss a starter... Nico is cooking... Nico the killer.

Really surprised DJJ was not resigned - but props to Nico pivoting so quickly

Naji looked good for the Pelicans - can he make a jump here to fulltime starter?

Heard a very knowledgeable NO guy interviewed by one of the DFW sports radio stations, gave a glowing report on Naji Marshall.

Return to Dallas Mavericks
