Three hasn't been Mavs' charm

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jan 1, 2008 8:42 pm

The 3-ball isn't always the Mavericks' money ball.

In fact, when they launch 20 or more, they usually come up broke. The Mavs are 2-7 and have lost six in a row when the long ball becomes their dominant choice of shots.

The 3-pointer always has been and always will be a significant team weapon. Dirk Nowitzki and Jason Terry are two of the best deep shooters in the league, and Jerry Stackhouse and Josh Howard always have a green light.

But when the Mavericks get 3-happy, as they did in consecutive losses to Utah and Cleveland last week, it's typically not a good thing.

"There's a fine line," coach Avery Johnson said. "Even with our good 3-point shooters, I want them to first think about getting to the basket. My whole thing is, and our whole system is, how do we get points in the paint? Especially being a team that's not a big-time post-up team, we have to get points at the basket with penetration."

"You can get carried away sometimes, but if the [3-point] shot is there, you've got to take the wide-open ones," said Eddie Jones, who has made 1,519 3-pointers in his career. "If you're wide open and you're a good 3-point shooter, I think you've got to take those shots."

"Sometimes it takes more energy to go from 25 feet out to the basket," Johnson said. "When you are a little bit winded, the easiest thing to do is launch a 3, right? The harder thing to do is to go to that basket, get beat up and finish at that basket. Part of us playing with energy is not just settling for 3s, but exerting more energy to get to the basket."

When the Mavericks shoot 20 or more 3-pointers in a game, they are 2-7.
