Dirk as our Center?
has anybody here ever thought that dirk could also play as our center just as long as he plays with a tough PF in our frontcourt... good examples would be boozer and okur, oberto and duncan....
dirk is surely better than okur and oberto... and there arent really "killer" centers out there aside from yao...
maybe avery could create an "unconventional" lineup wherein we get a tough two-way PF in brand or even jermaine oneal so we could at least have some inside scoring aside from shooting jumpers...
seeing dampier get 16 points and 17 rebounds in the laker game just stirred my thoughts on this.. imagine if we had a legit all-star big who could actually catch the ball and pound it inside...

the thing is, ther are a lot more elite power forwards in the league compared to centers, but dirk is listed as a PF...
and when we meet elite teams, its the small forwards like bowen, grant hill and odom who guard dirk..
so i dont see why he cant play center as long as he's paired up with a tough 2 way PF...
though there arent many out there available, it's still more compared to looking for our big guard stopper.. something weve needed since wade torched us in the finals in 2006...
if dallas could swing a deal for a brand-maggette package, i'd be comfortable with dirk at center with brand's defense.. i just dont know how he'll fare after his injury...

Yes, Nellie thought that.
If we had Tim Duncan, Dwight, etc as our PF it would work. Those scenario's are unrealistic. Dirk at C is no good, history has shown. Been there, done that.
Avery is not an "unconventional" kind of guy. Although when he has tried to throw in Bass at the 5 with Dirk, it is not a pretty sight.

jermaine would be tall enough to be our center, so dirk could slide back down to PF... but it would depend what it would cost.. probably josh howard... if that were the case, then i'd first try for a josh-marion swap, then if that fails, i'll look for a way to send him to indy for JO...
if dampier could get 16 and 17 with kidd, then i could imagine JO getting better numbers....

dirk is indeed listed as a PF, but come to think of it, a whole lot of elite bigs are listed as PF instead of C... and dirk could not even defend those guys in his dreams....
like i said, if we face san anotonio, phoenix, and other elite teams, dirk doesnt even guard their PF's... and on the offensive side, he is guarded by the other team's SF's like bowen, odom and grant hill....

IMO, this "trauma" of having dirk play center in the nellie years was brought about by dirk having equally "soft" power forwards like walker and jamison and even lafrentz... if dirk were to be paired up with a tough 2 way PF, then i think it might work... if dirk had ben wallace those days, im sure a lot of us wouldnt really think dirk at C is a bad idea...
i mean think about it, dirk is too slow to guard the SF spot, and he's too soft to guard the PF spot in which most elite teams have all-star power forwards.. so where does that put him? PG? SG? or C?

Dirk as our center?
Sure, it's always worked before. It really worked well when we had 6 allstars on the team at the same time. We will probably make it all the way to the first round of the playoffs like we did then.

if our PF is underfsized to be a center like elton brand, then i guess dirk would be the center then...
I'd think Brand would still be guarding the centers as well as centers guarding Brand. Dirk being Center would only happen if the Power Forward was more Athletic than Dirk. Shawn Marion as a great example would allow Dirk to be guarded by centers.
Here are some lineups that would make Dirk Center.
PG Kidd SG Terry SF Stackhouse PF Howard C Dirk
PG Kidd SG Lue SF Terry PF Howard C Dirk
PG Terry SG Lue SF Stackhouse PF Howard C Dirk
Yeah so having a slightly smaller player would not necessarily make Dirk Center.
