And not just for players.
The latest example of tension came after the Mavericks' 102-100 loss to the Los Angeles Lakers, when
owner Mark Cuban and coach Avery Johnson had a heated exchange shortly after the game, according to two sources.
The Mavericks had fallen behind by 21 at halftime and 25 in the third quarter before making a comeback. Afterward, an apparent heat-of-the-moment argument happened in Johnson's office.
Both Johnson and Cuban downplayed the incident Wednesday, saying it was nothing out of the ordinary and there were no lingering problems. Johnson dismissed the situation, saying: "Everything's good."
Nevertheless, the Mavericks clearly are reeling after the humbling loss to the Lakers.
a little more of those little arguments and we might just see a new coach in Big D....

I doubt we fire Avery this late in the season. I think he's gone if we don't make a decent run in the playoffs though. Cuban didn't pay all that money to keep losing.

J-Kidd, the player-coach. It's pre-arranged in the trade.

Avery has been trying to jam his square peg "system" into a round hole...it wasn't working and it still isn't. I really think this team could use a dose of a more relaxed, level-headed coach who knows to make adjustments instead of the raving one we have on the sidelines, calling every single play and treating the players like they're kindergardners.
Not only does Avery seem to think he is being maligned (see his frequent comments about the players not being intense enough, etc etc, the "poisonous media"), he comes off like he is too good for this team when in reality, he inherited a very talented team that very well could have won a championship with a more experienced and better coach instead of the one who lost his mind during the Miami series and then proceeded to be outcoached in every way possible in the GS series.
But don't tell that to Avery. In his mind, it's the medias, the players, the neighbor's dog's fault. Not his.

so he'll win a championship,
everyone will credit Don Nelson's players
and a year later half those same players will basically quit on him
and Avery will tote around a gun in an airport....

Avery will get fired... Its just a matter of when rather than if at this point. I dont really know who any good replacements are other than obvious ones like Coach K and legendary coaches like that... Theyw ere talking about it earlier in the Celts-Mavs game

Jeff Bzdelik is an example of a head coach who has a flexible system. When Juwan Howard was their go-to guy he slowed it down, when Melo and co. arrived, he sped it up. I'm not familiar with his X&O's and defensive philosophies though, and probably not the right coach for a team that wants to win NOW.

The system needs Kevin Garnett, Kobe Bryant, and Chris Paul to succeed. So he's looking forward to transform Dirk, JoHo, and Kidd into them. When he succeeds, it'd be too late to compete for anything.
But the real poroblem is, we trade somebody who steps up in the 4th in a trade. Devin usually steps his game up in 4th quarters.
JoHo has a history of disappointing in the final period. Stack would lose his mind to think like he's MJ or Kobe. JET is nowhere close to be the crunch guy he supposed to be. J-Kidd can't hit anything. Damp is a servable big but don't ask him to score 20 in a given night.
So the opponents can put 3 or 4 defenders on Dirk in the 4th quarters. That's why we lose so many close games. Even worser, he can't get a comfortable lead early as we miss Devin Harris. And we can't stop anybody either. We have no Desagana Diop to protect the forest now.
Yes, Kidd makes Dirk better. But you can't count on Dirk to go crazy in every 4th quarters against 3-4 defenders. Even Kobe can't do it himself.
The inconvenient truth is - we don't have enough 4 quarters scorers on the team. I can envision the first round exit. Please pre-arrange Artest/Kobe-opt-out-and-sign-with-Mavs deal. Or it would be too late.

For the time being, maybe we should consider Ruben Patterson. He competes well at the end of the game. Or maybe we should lobby Brent Barry not to re-sign with the Spurs.

And we should look at the bench for more scoring punch in the 4th. Newcomers Allen, Wright, Magloire, and Lue have something to offer.

DALLAS -- Brandon Bass was at the heart of an argument between Mavericks coach Avery Johnson and team owner Mark Cuban, concerning Bass' playing time and his performances against top teams, a source said.
Cuban, the source said, believes Bass hasn't produced consistently against top teams and that Johnson is playing the third-year power forward too much.
Cuban denied the encounter after Tuesday's loss to the Los Angeles Lakers centered on Bass. The owner and the coach both downplayed it as a fiery, but not untypical, conversation between two passionate and stubborn personalities.
"No, it wasn't about Bass. It was just venting," Cuban answered by e-mail. He did not attend Thursday's game against the Celtics. "Happens all the time. Just like it has with former coaches. I've even blogged about it before.
"And anyone who says Bass doesn't show up for big games is an idiot and missed the Warriors and Spurs games."
Bass had 16 points and six rebounds in 30 minutes in the Feb. 28 loss at San Antonio. He posted 12 points and 11 rebounds in the Jan. 2 home win against the Warriors. Against the Celtics on Thursday, Bass had 10 points and five rebounds in 11 minutes.
In 13 games since Jan. 1 -- prior to Thursday night -- against the seven other West teams occupying playoff spots and East division leaders Boston, Detroit and Orlando, Bass has averaged 8.8 points and 5.0 rebounds in 20.9 minutes, practically mirroring his season averages of 8.2 points, 4.5 rebounds and 20.4 minutes.
Bass, though, has had three tough outings this month against Utah, Houston and the Lakers on Tuesday. In those three games, he totaled 11 points and 11 rebounds.
"He's had an awfully good year for us," Johnson said. "Just unfortunately, he didn't have one of his good nights [Tuesday]."

It makes me cringe every time I see Bass at the C spot......

Bass is fine at center in certain circumstances. However, Dirk at center with a SF at the PF spot is really when things are pitiful.

Thats the problem. Anytime you have to look to other players to produce in the 4th quarter, rather than have your top players do the task, you have a problem.
However, this is just one of MANY problems.

Who's fault is it that we have virtually 5 PFs on this team and only 1 center...unless you want to count Magloire.
We only have one rim defender on this team.
I think Avery is gone and Donnie will take over temporarily.
