Post#1 » by curboys » Tue Mar 25, 2008 2:41 am

Is the 2008 draft pick that Dallas traded to N.J. in the Kidd deal lottery protected ?

Yes, but even without Dirk, I dont expect the Mavs to fall into the lottery.

Does that mean that the Nets would get the next available 1st round pick of ours or do they simply lose out on that draft pick? I have to assume they'd get next years or whenever the rules stipulate they can get it. Basically, we traded them two 1st Round picks, are they eventually getting those no matter what, however many years it takes, or did they lose one of them if we don't make the playoffs?

they dont lose it, there are certain restrictions and the restrictions go down each year, say this year its lottery protected and next year its top 10 protected followed by top 5 then top 3 then unprotected.

like when the pistons drafted darko that was from a trade like 5 years before w/the grizzlies, but the restrictions got so small where the pistons got the pick from the grizz no matter where they were

same with the hawks and suns this year if the hawks win the lottery the suns get the #1 pick

Nets fans believe it is lottery protected this year. So if you fall out of the playoffs, you keep it. however, we'd then get next year's pick no matter what as well as the 2011 pick no matter what.

Make the playoffs, and we get this year's pick and the 2010 pick (unprotected)

BIg WIl- the rules say you can't trade your pick 2 years in row. So if the Nets get the 2010 first rounder, the earliest the next one could be conveyed is 2012.

But I also highly doubt that a pick goes from being fully lottery protected one year to completely unprotected the next.

I'm pretty sure the whole 2 yr thing was to allow for protection. At least that is my understanding.
