Who has the edge in the Mavericks-Hornets series?
Backcourt
Make no mistake about it, the Hornets have the best point guard in the league in Chris Paul. The bad news for New Orleans? He's paired with one of the weakest starters in the playoffs: Morris Peterson, who is little more than a spot-up 3-point shooter.
The Mavs counter with veteran savvy in Jason Kidd and Jerry Stackhouse. Both have played great defense at times, and each brings a lot of positives offensively. But after a combined 27 seasons in the league, do they have enough energy for a long playoff run?
The edge: Hornets. Chris Paul is that good.
Frontcourt
The Hornets bring youth and athletic ability with David West and Tyson Chandler, and Peja Stojakovic is the veteran sharpshooter. Chandler is a rebounder who can run the floor, and West is 20-10 waiting to happen.
Dirk Nowitzki is the best frontcourt player in this series, and Josh Howard might have the best all-around game. Erick Dampier has been reborn with Jason Kidd on his side, but he needs to avoid foul trouble.
The edge: Mavericks. Their frontcourt simply does more things well.
Coaching
People forget that Byron Scott helped the Nets -- with Jason Kidd -- to back-to-back NBA Finals, and he has played a big role in New Orleans' success and the development of Chris Paul.
Avery Johnson has enjoyed some of the greatest success in Mavs history and has been a part of the franchise's greatest failures. He still has much to prove.
The edge: Hornets. Scott's experience could be the difference.
Intangibles
The biggest intangible could be the Hornets' home-court advantage. The Mavericks went 17-24 on the road, while New Orleans proved to be formidable at home (30-11) and away (26-15).
But while the Hornets might have the next MVP, the Mavs already have an MVP. Dirk Nowitzki and Dallas -- with all that postseason experience -- won't be fazed by a little first-round matchup.
The edge: Mavericks. They will be eager to prove last year's playoff flop was a fluke.
