Dallas Mavericks face tougher test in improving West

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Fri Jun 6, 2008 10:28 pm

The Mavericks and Suns, of course, were on the sidelines after the first round.

Bear in mind nobody has even heard from Portland yet, and the Blazers are certain to be a force when a healthy Greg Oden and another lottery pick join the already-rising Brandon Roy and LaMarcus Aldridge.

All of which means the Mavericks, like the Suns and Spurs, have a critical summer ahead. They all appear to be headed for one last fling at proving they are still among the West's elite with their current cores.

Work is piled up for each, particularly the Mavericks. That doesn't mean they have to go out and pursue major trades. They simply have to get better somehow.

"The West, top to bottom, is as thick as ever," Mavericks president Donnie Nelson said Friday after returning from the pre-draft camp at Orlando, Fla. "There's no question we're going to be active. We always are.

I don't remember the Mavs being all that active last offseason.

You don't remember because they were early favorites to get KG and Kobe and neither of them happened. But I would call that active

I'm not sure that just talking makes you active. I think you have to actually get someone for your team to be active.

GM's talk to other GM's all the time but not always do anything.

Donnie sucks, he's a terrible GM.
I don't think he could improve the mavs significantly to make us again a contender. Actually, I don't think he's able to improve the team.

We'd probably be active enough to trade Josh howard for another washed up grandpa.

I think as a trade seeker and initiator Donnie is lacking but I think he has a good eye for talent, which explains the additions of guys like Diop and Bass. I won't be surprised if we make a another roster addition from a Summer League commodity that failed elsewhere.

We don't exactly have the best trading chips so we don't have too much to help Donnie Nelson in his job. I mean you can't cook without ingredients in the cupboard.

Donnie sucks only because it seemed his input was moot last year. It was only Cube's and Avery's input that squeakied the wheel....

Donnie is an obscure talent finder, he's proven that talent time and time again...
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...
