Josh Smith

Over the last few days there have been articles about teams having interest in Josh Smith. I don't believe this is because they have trade offers up for smith, I believe almost every team in the nba would be interested in having him. If Smith is looking for a contract around 12-13 million dollars a year and Atlanta won't pay it (I don't know why they wouldn't) then maybe they could do a sign and trade with the mavs and get back a few players for the same money. I don't know if you can do sign an trades with a qualifying offer there or how it works, but ill just assume his contract next year will be around 12 million.

Mavs Trade:
Josh Howard
Brandon Bass
Jerry Stachouse

Atlanta Trades:
Josh Smith
Speedy Claxton
2008 Second Round Pick

This work so Atlanta gets a player similar to smith who is a better shooter but isn't as great of a defender as Smith. We give them Bass to sweeten the deal, and Claxton is swapped for Stackhouse because they are both going to receive around 10 mil the next 2 years and it gives the hawks a small amount of cap relief next year, or they can package stack and trade him sometime later. The second round pick is in there to give the mavs another player in this deal so we don't come out of this with even less players on our roster. Smith could be a player the mavs try to build around for the future. I don't know if the hawks management would do this or even if the hawks fans would but I think they would rather see this happen than let him walk for free. I know how mavs fans love Bass but we have Dirk and there is no need to keep him unless we trade dirk. Smith fits the mavs team perfectly and would be a great compliment beside Kidd.

Atlanta doesnt do it. They already have Marvin Williams & Josh Childress at SF and dont need Howard. Josh Smith plays PF for them. Doesnt make sense.

Ya that's probably true. The only way I could see them thinking about this is if they trade Marvin Williams or if they don't keep Josh Childress because Howard is better than both of them but they won't get Howard if both of them are still there.

I wish Cuban would just realize the Kidd trade didn't work out and maybe trade him for something. I personally love Kidd but he is old and I don't think we can win a championship with him on our team. I'm really hoping that Carlisle will solve the problem with Kidd and maybe it was just Avery holding him back. Kidd has the most value IMO because of his expiring deal mixed with his hall of fame talent. I would only want to trade him for an all star caliber player and a high to mid first round pick and I don't know if we could get that.

The only way Atlanta does it is if they really don't like Josh Smith and don't see him in their future plans, and we all know that isn't it. I don't think it would be money at all because Howard is set to make 8-9 million a year over the next few years. Now, if Josh Smith is asking for superstar cash (16-18 million a year) then that's a different deal. If that's the problem, Atlanta gives him up. But I don't see him getting it on the open market.

Dallas and Atlanta are bad trade partners when it comes to Josh Smith. Not only does Atlanta have Marvin Williams, but Josh Howard just won't cut it, and Atlanta would need a piece(s) that can continue to make the team a playoff contender. Atlanta's just giving up too much age, the hometown kid, and someone who needs to be a fixture on the team for many years.

I would be more interested in trading for Marvin Williams anyway. Not saying hes a better player than Smith, because he is not, but his pricetag is probably not nearly as high, and Dallas would have a better shot at it.

Marvin's expandable. His touch is nice, but he's not the most coordinated player, and he doesn't have a 3 ball. That's what hurts his game since he's a small forward and it doesn't open up things for the rest of his teammates. I doubt Dallas would trade Josh Howard for him and I would hate to see it happen. Marvin makes Dallas younger but doesn't improve the team with the loss of Josh Howard.

I can't think of a trade that would work for Dallas to acquire Marvin Williams from Atlanta if it doesn't include Josh Howard. On the low end it would probably need to be Brandon Bass and two future first round picks.

Throw in Cedric Ceballos and I bet Atlanta bites.
