Eddie Jones Option

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Sat Jun 28, 2008 12:44 pm

Eddie Jones must exercise his player option for next season before Tuesday. The Mavericks expect him to do so, meaning he will be on the roster at about $1.9 million.

I hope he's here next season. Not so much to play, but just as potential filler in a trade and insurance in case of injuries, though he'll probably be hurt himself.

Eddie Jones: He told me a couple of months ago that he would seriously consider passing on his contract this year because he misses his wife and kids back in Miami. Looks like now he’s coming back. … but he’s not coming back. The attraction to Eddie now is all about including him (and his final contract year) as a trade asset.

Perfect.

Thanks Rand10 for that link.

That is the best of all worlds.

1) Eddie Jones still gets paid
2) Dallas can fill in salary in an upgrade
3) Cheap buyout for the other team in a salary cutting mode. His $1,976,400 can act as $2,470,500 when you add the 125% rule.

Is it worth losing the roster spot? I guess with all of the holes right now it does make things OK.

It isn't the roster spot that matters yet. We have unlimited roster space until we actually go to camp, so having Jones' salary is an asset rather than liability at this point. Come mid-October we can start worrying about his taking up a space on the roster, because I would fully expect him to have been dealt by then, assuming that is in the plans.
