? about roster spots

Post#1 » by Uncbird » Sun Jun 29, 2008 5:54 pm

How many spots are open going into this year? Who are the guaranteed going into next year, etc? Trying to figure out what the chances of a guy like Rey Terry or JaJuan Smith making the team come fall?

We have 7 players with guaranteed contracts (Dirk, Kidd, Howard, Terry, Dampier, Bass, Stackhouse) and 1 with a player option (Jones). Assuming Eddie picks up his option that's 7 open roster spots. The young guys should have a pretty good shot.

This year, Dallas has many open slots that can be filled.

Guaranteed contracts...
1) Erick Dampier
2) Dirk Nowitzki
3) Brandon Bass
4) Josh Howard
5) Jerry Stackhouse
6) Jason Terry
7) Jason Kidd
8) Eddie Jones (player option)

Bird or Early Bird rights
9) Deveon George
10) Antoine Wright
11) Jose Juan Barea

Unrestricted Free Agents without Bird rights
12) Tyronne Lue
13) Juwan Howard
14) Jamaal Magloire
15) Malik Allen

Unsigned 2nd round picks
a) Shan Foster
b) Reyshawn Terry
c) Renaldas Seibutis

Of the UFA group, the only player I would not mind seeing in a Mavs uniform again is Lue if he settles for vet min. If he demands more than that, then I would rather resign Barea with early bird rights. I hope Eddie Jones opts out. The 2nd group people are good for S&T.

1. I would trade Eddie Jones expiring contract for almost anything (assuming he exercises his option).
2. Trade Jerry Stackhouse for something (draft pick)
3. Do not resign Juwan Howard, Jamaal Magloire, Jose Juan Barea.
4. Resign Devean George
5. Resign Antoine Wright
6. Resign Tyronne Lue
7. Sign Reyshawn Terry
8. Sign Shan Foster

10. Sign Diop

10) Desagana Diop

15) Player acquired in Stackhouse, Jones Trade.

If there was anyway to get a Vince Carter trade done without giving up Josh Howard then of course do it. If it requires Josh Howard, I would consider it only if we get our 2010 1st round pick back with it.

Here is how I think I could help the FO out...

Trade #1
Damp
Stack
S&T George
S&T Lue

for

Artest
B. Miller
L. Wright
2009 2nd round pick

Trade #2

J. Howard
Bass
S&T Barea
S&T Jones

for

D. Armstrong
J. Boone
V. Carter
Diop
Rights to CDR

Sign Lowry as he is castoff from the dregs of Memphis
Sign Pops

Lineup:
Kidd/Lowry/Armstrong
Carter/Terry/CDR
Artest/Wright/Foster
Dirk/Boone/Pops
B. Miller/Diop/L. Wright
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

If you're talking about Malik Allen, I actually thought he played pretty well for us. The only problem was we had to play him at center with no Diop. I'd love to have him back as the 3rd string pf though instead of complete scrubs like Juwan or Pops.

I really don't get the Malik Allen hate either. He played good D, hit the open shot and hustled. I agree that he's not a center, but he's a good backup 4.

Allen can take Juwan Howard's spot next season...veteran insurance at PF.
There is no need for both of those guys though. If we have to carry a 4th PF it should be Pops or someone else who is young and athletic.

If we can vastly improve the SG spot with a Bass trade, I'd be okay with Allen as Dirk's primary backup.
Skinner would be my first choice though.

I would do it in a heartbeat, dont get me wrong, but do you really believe sacramento would do it??
I dont think so, they dont even save some money by doing this trade

Damp gives them a different type of center. George and Lue would be expirings giving them options for the 2009 FA period. Lue would make it so they could lose Udrih. Losing Artest puts Sactown anyway in rebuilding mode. Kevin Martin and Damp are two pieces they could build around. Stack's contract in 2009 only is worth $2million against the cap if waived making him cap friendly also. It's a Laker/Memphis kind of fleecing trade. The 2009 2nd round pick to us could be eliminated or it could be our 2nd round pick that goes to them that could make it more palatable.

Malik Allen sucks. Are you kidding? He was constantly attacked on the defensive and offensive end. He was like a shorter Shawn Bradley

Like we've mentioned, Allen is not a center. Of course the team's defense will suffer if you ask him to play that position 90% of the time. Offensively, all we asked him to do was knock down open shots, and he was very consistent in doing that. What more do you want from a 2nd/3rd string pf on a minimum contract?
