Golden State Signs Corey Maggette

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Wed Jul 2, 2008 2:36 am

The San Antonio Spurs have targeted Corey Maggette and are the front-runners to sign the Los Angeles Clippers’ free agent forward, multiple league sources said Tuesday night.

While no deal was imminent, Maggette would be expected to sign a multi-year deal for the mid-level exception, a move that would fulfill the Spurs’ desperate need for perimeter athleticism and scoring.

I'm not looking forward to this if it does happen. The last thing we need to deal with is SA adding a weapon like Mags and getting bit a younger.

That's the worst thing...our division rival getting that much better.

Maggette would be perfect here. There goes another team leap-frogging the Mavs.

If Maggette signs for the MLE and its not in Dallas then the Mavs front office has failed. pure and simple. its one thing to lose him to a team that gives him $8 million but its another to not land him if he is willing to sign for the MLE.

Cuban better get his ass over to Maggettes place and pick Kidd up along the way to help him persuade Mags. Take a whole suitcase of mavericks short robes too. Promise him a PS3, Wii and an Xbox for his locker. Get him Scarface on Blu-ray. Do what it takes to get this guy in here and away from the Spurs.

The Mavs have to be a better fit for Maggette than the Spurs. We have this hole at SG and he could step right in and be the starter with a big role. With Ginobili there his role will be much smaller.

If I were the Mavs I would get on the phone and offer him the starting SG position for the same money the Spurs are offering (full MLE).

We can try to work out a sign and trade with N.J. for Diop instead of using the MLE.

Imagine:

Kidd
Maggette
Howard
Dirk
Damp

JET
Stack
Bass
Diop

That looks like a pretty solid 9 men and that does not include the rest of the bench with:

George
Lue
Gerald Green
Wright
Reyshawn Terry
Shan Foster

Maggette would most likely start at the 3 for the Spurs. I don't see any problem finding him minutes there.

They like to have Parker, Ginobili and Bowen on the floor in crunch time. So unless they are going to go microscopically small with Maggette and Duncan then Maggette may be the odd man out.
He would certainly get minutes but if he wants more of a sure role the Mavs are a better situation for him.

its still early, so im not getting my hopes up as a spurs fan. lets wait and see what happens over the next week and a half.

but yeah, he fits a big need for the spurs too. the spurs would likely go with bowen and maggette in the starting line-up, with manu coming off the bench. i dont see how he would have to take a smaller role on the spurs.

Actually, they do go small quite a bit at the end of games. I even think his playing time would be more guaranteed in SA than it would here. Our supposed hole at the 2 has a very good player starting there.

I thought I just explained it. The Spurs are not going to leave Ginobili on the bench at crunch time. And they like to have Bowen out there for those key defensive stops also in crunch time. They are not going to take Parker or Duncan off the floor so is Maggette going to player PF or Center during crunch time. The only thing that could happen is that Pop tries to swap out Bowen and Maggette on offensive and defensive possessions. That does not alway work too well. I am not saying he would not have a big role but he would certainly be on the floor at crunch time for the Mavs.

this year the spurs went small very often, especially with the way horry had been playing. hes usually our pf of choice when we want to put 4 shooter on the floor with duncan. but last year we went to finley and udoka a lot (especially late) to fill that role. i think maggette could fill that role better than either of those two.

If anyone thinks the Spurs will have Bowen over Maggette in crunch time, they obviously have not watched the decline of Bowen over the last 2 years. His jumpshot is better, but his defense has declined since the refs started watching him more combined with his age.

OK I'm going to give the FO the benefit of the doubt and assume they already called and begged etc etc, but Maggette would rather play for the Spurs or whoever.

B/c if Donnie and Mark were after Gerald freakin Green instead of banging on Maggette's door then they are incompetent idiots and should be torched out of town. Also, if we sign Diop to the full MLE and that's our sole offseason move, I will laugh.

Screw Diop. If Maggette's agent is stupid enough not to be able to get Maggette somewhere for more than the MLE, why shouldnt Dallas offer him that and a starting job, etc. He would definately have a better fit system for him, for the same amount of money, if he came to Dallas. I really hope the Spurs dont get him though

I guess thats the way to do it. I still believe maggette prefers orlando though.
if you goes to the spurs, well, than that is a major blow. but it would go all along with them winning the championship in uneven years...
