Free-agent center DeSagana Diop on Tuesday gave a verbal commitment to sign a new contract to return to Dallas Mavericks, according to NBA front-office sources.
Sources told ESPN.com that Diop, traded by the Mavericks to New Jersey in February as part of the Jason Kidd deal, will receive the Mavericks' full mid-level exception in a five-year deal starting at nearly $6 million.
Diop cannot officially sign and the Mavericks cannot officially comment until July 9, which is the first day NBA teams can announce signings and trades after a league-wide moratorium on roster moves is lifted.
Diop was a key member of the Dallas team that toppled its in-state rivals from San Antonio and reached the 2006 NBA Finals. It was the franchise's first trip beyond the Western Conference finals.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
This blows.
That MLE could have been used elsewhere.
I guess the FO thinks Stack, Jones, Wright, Foster or Green will be great next to Howard. Either that, or Dampier and/or Bass is on their way out.
Diop is worth MLE, but not the right piece for us to target.

If we gave him the full MLE then Donnie and Cuban are idiots. I would love to have Diop but not for the full MLE. Other teams are talking about getting Corey Maggette for the MLE and we are going to spend ours on freaking DeSagana Diop. I can't imagine why we don't win NBA championships.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
Assuming the MLE is at $5.5 million this year and Diop gets max raises (8%), that's almost $33 million / 5 years. Too much imo.
Hopefully they'll at least work on a s&t.

Un-freaking-believable. The only thing funny about this is that I was just writing a post about how incompetent our front office was when this was announced. I am really starting to hate this team. Bring on Cowboy season.

The good news, if there is any, is that Magloire, Juwan and Malik are most likely not going to be Mavs next year.

Re: ESPN: Diop for full MLE
The Spurs are offering the MLE to a guard who averages 22 and 6. We are offering the MLE to a center who has never averaged 3 and 5. This is why the Spurs are who they are and we suck.
Please tell me this is a joke.
I bet this is the reason we weren't in the running for Maggette. I bet we didn't even call him.

We had competition. He would have NEVER have gotten that amount for that long if we didn't have competition. Congrats to Diop and his agent using a weak FA class and Free Enterprise to its highest heights. Look for an increase on our ticket prices this coming year because of this acquisition. Ya know, it's not how much we got him back for or for how long; it's that he's back. Diop is home and that's all right with me.

Full MLE on Diop, Sad. Having him back is good news though, just not for such a high price.
Oh Yeah

HAHAHA this is like a nightmare and not unexpected.
Donnie and Mark are completely delusional. Other teams are going hard after Posey, Maggette.
Meanwhile the Mavs:
-don't move up the draft b/c they want to save money
-sign Gerald Green, which is whatever, doesn't make a freakin difference though
-and re-sign Diop so now we have ANOTHER OVERPAID role player.
-re-sign JJB who is like a beheaded chicken on the court and serves more as a mascot on the bench
-is going to retain Devean George
There are no excuses if that's the roster they are trotting out next season. The players may as well book their summer plans for april.

I think San Antone with Maggette is worse than its previous incarnation. The 4 wing/center offense of San Antonio can be defended better by a coach not overwhelmed by Pop's presence. San Antonio doesn't scare me with Maggette. Houston might, and New Orleans might (in place of Petersen) but not San Antonio. As long as we have a PG that can chase down Parker, we have the man that can cover Duncan well - in fact we have both of them. Must you be so negative dfn? It's wearing thin, kinda like my stupid trades.
I'll make YOU a deal dfn. I'll stop suggesting trades if you can stop being negative until the season starts. Deal?
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...

I'm not arguing but does it really matter if we had competition. A bad signing is a bad signing.

I think we have a right to be negative when all signs point to another failed offseason, especially for a team with a 1 year window (IF THAT) and full of overpaid role players with bad contracts.
I guess I had higher hopes when Donnie mentioned being "creative" you know I thought they would actually address our huge gap at SG and need for some low post scoring.

Who is giong to guard Maggette? Who is going to guard Ginobili? Why do they have to go with 4 wings. Why not continue to bring Ginobili off the bench? Do you not see replacing Finley with Maggette as an improvement?

WTF do I care about your trades? Do what makes you happy.
And I haven't even begun to start being negative. I haven't really said too many things negative this offseason until today when it was well-deserved. This is nothing compared to the last three offseasons. How should I act YDM when I know my team has done one (Please Use More Appropriate Word) move after another to place themselves further and further away from a championship? Should I be happy? Should I just accept it and pay for season tickets? Am I not allowed to be negative on the teams board?

Now hold on a sec ppp, let's look at what we have OFFICIALLY right now.
Kidd/Terry/Barea
Foster/Green/Jones
Howard/Stack/George
Dirk/Bass/
Damp/Diop/
Pops could be 3rd string PF
It is unknown who could be 3rd string C
This means Wright would not be signed
This also means last year's 2nd rounders still would not be signed and would once again play in Europe.
BUT....
Everyone on this board is confused on the terminology of what is being said about George...
-is going to retain Devean George
That doesn't mean he will be on the roster come Halloween. That doesn't mean that at all.
If you retain someone, you sign them. He has to signed in order to be signed-and-traded. He has Early Bird Rights and wants to use them. The reason Carlisle was talking so highly of him was so George wouldn't up and leave without the S&T. I think George gets to sign at 125% of his contract's value where it doesn't mess with the cap. So, the Mavs can trade for someone at the value of George's contract without it affecting the cap. It's tactical, it's practical. Don't look for George to be here. He's sign and trade fodder. I hope I am right...
If we could just close games with Luka, Kyrie, Green, Maxi, and Wood that'd be great...
