Denver having a fire sale?

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Jul 22, 2008 2:23 pm

Marcus Camby has been shown to the city line. Could Allen Iverson be the next high-dollar player to be drop-kicked out of Denver by the cost-cutting Nuggets?
Indications are the Nuggets would trade Iverson if the deal was right. They'd also trade Kenyon Martin or Nene, if anybody wanted either. And owner Stan Kroenke would be willing to deal the Rocky Mountains if he owned them and it would keep him from paying the luxury tax.
But Iverson has trade value. With an expiring $20.84 million contract, he would be an ideal acquisition for a team looking to clear salary-cap room for next summer in one swoop.

Link

Allen Iverson:

$21,937,500

Nene:

$9,680,000

$10,520,000

$11,360,000

$11,600,000 (PO)

Kenyon Martin

$14,181,818

$15,363,636

$16,545,454 (PO)

It's certainly a investment we would need to walk a fine line on  , but Nene is the one that sticks out the most to me, because if he can stay healthy he should have a very productive season.

Eric Dampier has three years left and moving Jason Terry is something I would like to see eventually happen.

I wouldnt mind trying Iverson with Kidd at the point. I would have liked to see Dallas try to grab Camby though.. I think that would have helped a lot

I personally think iverson would actually big a good fit along jason kid and w/ dirk. he would be that second consistant scorer who is more unselfish than most give him credit for (not to also mention his toughness and ability to get to the line). The talk for him would have to start w/ j-ho, and i personally don't think denver bites for just a j-ho + stack for iverson deal b/c of his expiring contract. they might go for this though:

Dallas Trade Breakdown

After giving up camby, denver needs insurance inside, especially since their remaining bigs are very injury prone. the thing is, is iverson worth it? Does this trade make us want to re-sign george to fill in the gap at SF? Who do we have back-up dirk now? I'm really not sure, i'd def have to consider this though

I do the deal to have 41 million come off the cap after next season.

If there's going to be any deal involving AI, they need to get a PG in return, that's what they've wanted for the longest time. I'd love to have AI, Kidd, and Dirk on the same team, but who's going to be our 3? One of our rooks/SL guys? Singleton? I don't know, but a backcourt of Kidd/AI is very small, and IMO very vulnerable.

I am not one to turn away Jason Kidd, but AI for Kidd makes too much sense IMO. As much as Dirk has excelled since Kidd has been here, he doesn't need Kidd to be an effective player. AI would bring a consistent 2nd scoring option, and I think that would make Josh a lot more comfortable not being relied on as much. We get to keep both Josh/Bass, and I think we'll find a lot more success with AI on this than we would with Kidd. (I'm all for some extra seasoning with Jason Kidd though, I thought it was an unfair opportunity for him and us because he was thrown into a pack of guys who he'd never played with before).

Teffer, you're deal has good pieces, but Miami is not giving up on Marion and Wright and not getting a legitimate Center/C in a PF body with a better contract in return. I think giving them Nene or Kenyon would be more sufficient. I know us absorbing AI's large contract is an issue, but giving up Howard means Jason Terry is nothing more than a bench player who will see limited action.

But with AI/Kidd, 41 million off the books IS attractive.

1) Dampier has 2 years, not 3 years left.....just want to clarify that.
2) I NEVER want to see Jason Terry and Iverson on the same team!
3) That said, I would not trade Howard or Bass for Iverson, much less both!

I see I'm not the popular opinion on this thread, but my opinion is AI could destroy this team faster than Jason Kidd did!

There really isn't much more that can be destroyed.

I think the destruction was done when the FO signed Terry and Stack to ridiculous contracts thinking they were going to help lead us somewhere.

I'd take a chance on just about anyone at this point. Howard, Kidd, and Dirk went nowhere so what makes Cuban and Donnie think 08-09 is going to be any different?

Besides, you know me, I'm ready for the silly notion of winning a championship with Dirk to come to an end asap so the 40-50 million that we would drop in salary next season is enticing enough for me.

You are not alone. I think he isn't a particularly good fit here, personally. Yeah, he's a great scorer, but is not all that efficient, and he needs the ball in his hands to be effective. Where does that leave Kidd? What does that do to Nowitzki? Dirk needs the ball in his hands sometimes, too. Just doesn't seem like a good fit. Plus, he's so expensive, then you've got 3 guys taking up nearly $60 mil a year. Good grief, how do you put any players around them with no money to work with?

I got your back on this one...

I also agree with your points here wholeheartedly.

If we are to succeed, we need to get younger. Yes, we're stuck with Kidd, but we need to get younger. Time to unload Jones and Stack. Their advanced ages are affecting the Mavs play adversely. Yes, they bring things to the table - but they also take a lot away. There are people we can trade Howard for and there are people we shouldn't. We're close, we just need to find a sucker, er a willing team to trade with. Don't discount Green whatever you do. He will be a player this year on the Mavs, and I mean that in the rotational sense.

Yes, I'm 40. I made it. Woo Hoo! Happy Freakin' Birthday to ol' YDM!

so if you're looking to get younger what better way to do it than through free agency?
dump all you can into a trade for Iverson's expiring and have 40+m off the books at the end of this next season? and then you enter that offeason with Damp's 10m expiring as a big trade chip and some cap room (assuming you're renting Kidd and AI)
