Hawks considering 2 S&T for Smith

There are at least two blockbuster sign-and-trade proposals the Atlanta Hawks are considering regarding Josh Smith.

One is from a Western Conference team and the other from the Eastern Conference with both teams apparently being amongst the NBA's powers.

The “proverbial” ball appears to be clearly in the Hawks’ court regarding both opportunities.

They say he could be sent to one of the biggest team of the West... Uh Wait, we are one of the biggest team of the West !

Do you think Dallas could acquire Josh Smith ? Who would we send to Atlanta ? Who else could land Smith ?
I think Dallas could send JoHo + somebody else for JSmith. As for me, I'd love to have Smith on our team. He is strong, skilled, good on the both end of the floor, he is more athletic than J-Ho and he would be fine to watch along with Jason Kidd.
But I'm also a diehard J-Ho fan, even if he struggled during the PO and even if he is a weed smoker, he is skilled to and I love his game.
And I also heard that Atlanta's FO loves JET, could we find an other way to acquire JSmith ?

Or I am dreaming ?

I think you are dreaming.

I can't imagine the Hawks wanting anything less than Dirk from the Mavs in return for Smith.

then it is the Hawks who are dreaming! Smith is good, but not Dirk good. don't care about stats or age or blah blah, simple fact.

I think Dallas or LA Lakers are the Western Conference team.

Only because those are two top West teams with the pieces to get a deal done.

Howard and Bass for the Mavs and Odom and Farmar for the Lakers.

Damn, lose JoHo and Baby Bass for Smith...
Kidd - Terry - Barea
Terry - Stack - Foster (I'd rather have him and cut Jones)
Smith - Green - Wright
Dirk - Singleton - (Rhodes ?)
Diop - Damp

We need to sign Rhodes in order to have an athletic PF such as Bass to back up Dirk, and I don't know if Rhodes can do what Bass did last season.

If the Lakers acquire Smith, they will be very dangerous (Fisher, Bryant, Smith, Gasol, Bynum !) but we will be in a good position for a Ron Artest trade then.

For some reason, I think the Hawks would want a star or at least star potential in return.

I would do Howard and Bass in a heartbeat because Smith has the potential to gradually become the star of the team as Dirk ages.

Any Josh Howard proposals for Josh Smith is just nonsense. The idea would be for Atlanta to acquire another 4, a center or future draft pick(s).

Josh Howard would play what position for Atlanta? The 4? HA The 3 and move Marvin to the 4? HA!

I just think it's really generic to throw out there a power in the West and a power in the East. I just think it means a whole lot of nothing

One thing I would worry about is Josh Smith is a PF. He's played PF for the last year or so and thats where he has been so so so good. You put him at SF, and while he will still be a good player, I dont think he would be nearly the player we would be paying him as.

Terry/Dirk would be our only 3-point shooters that are constantly in the rotation and one of them, Dirk is the one that creates all the open 3-point shots thru his double teams. I think it would be quite a risk to go after Smith for that fact alone. He's one of my favorite players in the league, but I just dont know that trading Howard/Bass for him, makes us any better. If we were rebuilding and gonna make Smith out PF of the future, Id be all over it.

Who is that 2nd guy that scores behind Dirk after this trade too? Terry? Cuz I dont think Smith will put up more than 16-PPG as a SF.

I'd do a deal with Dirk and Josh Smith as the centerpieces, though I'd want Atlanta to throw in something else with significant value.

Josh for Josh is a steal for the Mavs if that got accepted... Its a pipe dream though. There really isnt a scenario that doesnt involve Dirk, but if thats the case, I wouldnt even want the trade to happen... Unless we got Joe Johnson.

I just don't see Mark Cuban trading Dirk for any of the Atlanta players and I don't see the Atlanta Spirit Group paying Dirk's contract. $18,077,904, $19,795,714 and a player option of $21,513,524

Caution: Take everything below with a grain of salt.

However, Atlanta would probably try to throw Speedy on Dallas to make the money work.

Josh Smith - 6 years 78 million or 5 years 65 million?
Acie Law - $2,071,680 - $2,216,160 (TO) - $2,940,844 (TO) - $4,026,015 (OF)
Speedy Claxton - $5,757,818 - $5,209,454
2nd Round Pick

For

Dirk

I don't like it for Dallas, but it's the type of offer Atlanta may put on the table, and the money is the most accurate. Acie still might not be ready to take on the 1 after one season. Speedy's health is always a concern, so his minutes would need to be limited, but he's just a filler with a bad contract. Another knock is the lack of size from Acie, Jason Terry and Speedy.

Josh Smith
Marvin Williams
Acie Law
Speedy
Future First with protection
Roughly 26 million

For

Dirk
Josh Howard
Roughly 28 million

Another situation of depending on if Donnie and Mark want to get younger. I doubt they want to, but it's another offer that can possibly work for both teams, but it does change things rather drastically for both sides. I still don't like this for Dallas overall, but Dallas acquires a lot of the investment Atlanta has accumulated over the years by receiving a future first, it provides Dallas with even more to grow on by the way of the draft. Maybe a second needs to be included, not that it matters. Even still Marvin Williams didn't have 3-point range this past season, and as of right now from a fan standpoint it's very unclear if he's developed the range during the off-season. As you can see from the starting lineup below the trade forces the starting lineup to take a couple steps back due to the youth and uncertainty.

Jason Kidd
Jason Terry?
Marvin Williams
Josh Smith
Eric Dampier/Diop

Josh Smith will never be a franchise player. Why trade Dirk for him?

Josh Smith will be good but not even half of what Dirk is. Atlanta is not going to ask for Dirk seriously.

Im a huge hawks fan so i decided to come in here for a little fun...and i thought id call u out real quick.. josh smith at the 3 would be ridicoulous, he would create so many mismatches it wouldnt be fair!! but dont worry about him hes not coming to dallas!!!

I don't see Josh being a good fit at the 3 considering how streaky his jumper and range is. At times he shoots as if he's blindfolded so he can hurt his team just as fast as he helps it. He might be able to get a way with it on Dallas, but I don't think it would last the length of the season, and Dirk would become very frustrated with all the bricks.

While Atlanta's not getting ANY 3 pointers out of Marvin, he can still knock down the jumper, and that's why he's still valuable to Atlanta who have lacked shooters for some time now. Some fans seem to think it would be a good idea to move Josh to the 3, have Marvin come off the bench, and that would mean Al Horford moves to the 4....that's not a winner on the floor! It'd only add even more pressure on Joe and Mike to knock down the big shots. Marvin takes some of the weight off their shoulders and Josh won't be able to do that.

The Mavs just do not have the pieces to get Smith unless a third team is found and even then is he really what this team needs? With Howard at the SF and Dirk at the PF and really no SG to speak of the Mavs need to focus somewhere else unless Dirk is the price for Smith and the Mavs are also getting a SG in the process.

If we had Dirk and Smith, I would have Dirk at the 3 before I had Smith there...
