Before departing for China, where he will serve as an assistant coach for the Chinese national team in the Beijing Olympics, Dallas Mavericks president Donnie Nelson assessed his team’s 7-4 performance in summer leagues in Las Vegas and Salt Lake City.
"It went pretty much as expected," Nelson said. "We were encouraged by some of the guys and they have a chance to compete for spots on our team. We’ll see what happens."
The Mavericks currently have 13 guaranteed contracts. Guard Keith McLeod is also under contract, but it is not guaranteed.
Gerald Green, the 6-8 former slam dunk champion who was signed as a free agent, led the Mavericks with a 19.3 scoring average in summer league play. James Singleton, another 6-8 free-agent signee who the Mavericks hope will develop into a top-flight defender, also had a solid camp.
Nelson said Charles Rhodes, a bruising 6-8, 245-pound forward from Mississippi State, and JaJuan Smith, a 6-2 guard from Tennessee, will likely be invited to fall training camp.
"Rhodes is real athletic and showed really good promise," Nelson said. "Smith is a guy we have our eye on. The rest are open for discussion."
Nelson said the Mavs will not have a lot of candidates for the final two roster spots.
"We’re not going to have that many guys in training camp," he said. "It won’t be any more than 17 or 18. But we’re planning on having a good old-fashioned training camp with spots that are going to be won. We have 13 players with guarantees, but if one of the veterans shows up and is not prepared, we’re not afraid to cut guaranteed money."
One player who will not be in fall camp is Ronnie Seibutis, a 22-year-old 6-5 guard from Lithuania. He played only three games last year in Greece because of a back injury and was not completely healthy until summer league play began.
"We want to send him back to Europe for another year of maturation and experience," Nelson said. "He’s just now healthy so he needs to get another full year in. We’ll bring him back and look at him again next summer."
---i dont think we need McLeod, he sucks. We can go with Kidd/Terry/JJB as the PGs.
---i like the part about cutting veterans...that means YOU Eddie Jones.
---Eventhough not mentioned, i'm assuming R.Terry and Foster will be in camp, right??
