The Cavs are talking to Denver about restricted free agent J.R. Smith, and they should go after him hard. The 6-6 Smith is athletic, shot 40 percent on 3-pointers and 46 percent overall while averaging 12.3 points in only 19 minutes a game. With Denver signing wing man Dahntay Jones and being on a binge to cut payroll (they gave Marcus Camby to the Clippers to cut $10 million), it seems Smith should be available. The Cavs have plenty of expiring contracts, which should help Denver if it continues to want to keep payroll under control.

If Denver wants expiring contracts, we have that. Everyone keeps saying we need a good shooting guard, so why hasn't his name been mentioned? He shoots 40 percent from 3, averages 12.3 ppg per 19 mpg. If he was a starter and got around 30 minutes a game, he could easily be close to 20 points per game especially leaving a team that has Allen Iverson and Carmelo. He gives Kidd someone who likes to run and is a pretty good defender who isn't even 23 yet. Please don't give me the character issues because those are long gone, and plus, he was just a kid that didn't go through college.

1) JR Smith is a restricted FA, meaning we would have to offer Denver something better than letting JR Smith walk for nothing.
2) JR Smith would not be concidered overpaid at the MLE, but all Dallas has is vet min, therefore it would have to be a S&T, meaning Denver would be ADDING salary.
3) To satisfy Denver, it would have to be something like Martin + Smith for Stack + George + Bass (cuz they will want talent too), and that is overpaying finacially and talent wise
4) His name has been mentioned plenty of times up until we signed Diop.

I would think you could remove Bass from that deal, and Denver would still do it in a heartbeat. I doubt the Mavs would. Trading Martin for expiring deals would save them them a ton of money, so no reason they should get anywhere near equal talent. With luxury tax included though, how much does Martin cost Cuban in '09/'10? I would guess at least $20 mil, probably more. Is that worth adding JR Smith? I like Smith, but I don't think he's worth that.

But what about Bass for Smith without taking on the ugly Martin contract? If Denver is going to possibly lose Smith for nothing, then maybe they take Bass + Stack + $3 mil. Bass gives them a solid cheap young player and they need bodies. Stack at least gives them some minutes, and they could try to sell his name to the fans. The $3 mil pays a good chunk of his salary. Mavs get their starting SG and lose a palyer they may have for only 1 more year anyway. Getting rid of Stack is just gravy.

I think the Nuggets would prefer Stack over Bass for this reason. They traded Camby away for basically nothing, which means they are looking to dump money. Stackhouse has a hefty contract, is a decent ballplayer, and I think is a FA after this year. Yes Bass is better talent wise, but doesn't bring in the big contract they are looking for and probably wouldn't want to resign Bass or Stack next year. I meant to say that in my first post that it would have to be a S&T for him, but it would be great to get a 15+ PPG starter who is athletic, and won't take much to get and would be cheap. Also, he would probably get a 2 or 3 year deal at least, so we would have a good, young player for a couple years

I don't think you are getting what I am tyring to say. There is no way Denver does Stack for Smith because they would rather just not sign Smith at all than take on Stack to help the Mavs.

We need to find someone that has a bad contract that is still able to play and contribute so that they can dump them on us for Stack because the only reason anyone takes on stack is to get out of a bad contract period.
