Devean George signed a 2 year contract (4 mil)

Post#1 » by crucifixx » Wed Aug 20, 2008 6:21 pm

Devean George's stay in Big D is going to last longer than anyone imagined.
George and the Dallas Mavericks have reached an agreement on a new two-year contract worth about $4 million, according to his representative.

Agent Mark Bartelstein told ESPN.com on Wednesday that the deal soon will be made official and includes a player option for George to return to free agency after the coming season.
George, 30, appeared to have little future in Dallas beyond last season after his controversial refusal in February to be included in the Mavericks' trade with the New Jersey Nets for Jason Kidd.
Kobe Bryant has the NBA's only active no-trade clause, but George was able to prevent his inclusion in the deal on Feb. 13 by citing a little-known league rule applicable to a handful of players on one-year contracts. In a game that same night, George missed all 11 of his field-goal attempts in a home loss to Portland and was roundly booed by fans in Dallas.
The Mavericks and Nets completed a reworked trade without George days later, but the second version of the deal cost Mavs owner Mark Cuban more than $11 million extra last season alone in additional payroll and luxury-tax obligations. Fan discontent with George, though, faded quickly, as did any friction within the organization.
New coach Rick Carlisle was eager for the Mavericks to retain George, who spent the last two seasons in Dallas and is regarded as a perimeter threat and versatile defender off the bench when healthy after winning a ring with the Los Angeles Lakers in each of his first three pro seasons.
Injuries limited George to 53 games last season and averages of 3.7 points and 2.6 rebounds in 15.5 minutes per game.

I like it. He's a good energy/defense guy to have off the bench, and it's not like there is anyone better out there who we could realistically sign.

who cares? He cost cuban millions in new lux tax with his trade refusal, and delivered nothing. I still think he thought mavs would sign him for more than MLE. Why else would he care to reserve Bird Rights?

Another horrible signing.

Congrats Mavs Front office on having the worst offseason in Mavs history

The Mavericks front office with another pointless patch job...the rebuilding process after the next few years is going to be interesting with Donnie Nelson at the helm.

did it actually say "perimeter threat"?

maybe third times a charm?

soooo how many open spots are there now, if any? is it just the unguarenteed contract to whats his face that is up for competition in camp?

Shocked that Cuban even talked to George's agent in the first place... This signing doesnt change anything

Once again, you and I think alike Rand10.

Reasons why I like it:

1) 2 year (summer 2010)...same with everyone else

2) 4 mil. that is pocket change to Cubes though every dollar after tax does hurt.

3) Seeing has how everyone around here wants defensive shooting guards like Stevenson, Buckner, Hassell, hell....I even seen a few trades with Hughes :puke: as an answer to a defensive 2 guard and George is as good as any of those and can guard multiple positions.

4) Yeah, Marion sounds better...much better, but the fact that we still have Howard to either move to the 2 or trade is more palatable.

5) I'd much rather have George than some summer league player at the swing.

6) The 2 mil may come in handy at the trade deadline as a filler since it is hard to match most trades.

I'm only happy with this signing if it does lead to a trade. George doesn't make or break this team obviously but never the less it's still underwhelming.

DallasBasketball reports that FO gave George his bird rights again...so no trade

I wish they would just blow this thing up. C'mon the same cast, it's like trying to fit a square in a round hole, no matter how many times you try Donnie and Mark.

blow it up and hope that you can be competitive in 4 or 5 years? and hope your draft picks or people you trade for pan out? i dont think so.

i'd rather take my chances having a competative team now while bringing along some youngsters with potential (Bass, Green) and seeing what happens over the next two years. After that, in 2010 you have a TON of money under the salary cap to spend on the big time free agent class of that year.

And dont mention anything about Dirk being 31 or 32 or wahtever in 2010, we all know he will still be a superstar and 20+ ppg. Dirk's not going to break down just because he reaches some magical "declining" age that really is too low for today's atheletes. The guy is going to be a badass until 35 at least and then still be a good player (will have to rely more on shooting and get better at post play then).

I'd **** be so immensely turned off if they blew this thing up and have to sit through years of rebuilding and being happy with a 30 win season. Eff that.

Do you really think Devean George is as good as DeShawn Stevenson? Do you think the Mavs have a chance at winning anything this year? Do you see them getting out of the first round?

No. I never said he was better, but he is cheaper and did not cost any trade assets and "can" do as good as any of them. As far as any chance at winning? It is better with George than some summer league or 36 year old vet min player. This signing (one of last 2 on roster) is not going to make the difference no matter who you get, so why you are so upset over the singing is stunning to me. You (if you were GM) would not be able to sign anyone better than George at this point either....if fact you probably would not even be able to get someone at George's level, so congrats to our front office on this signing. We (you and me) would not have signed Diop knowing our needs...granted...but this siging is a far cry from "Another horrible signing. Congrats Mavs Front office on having the worst offseason in Mavs history"

I guess that's where we differ. I don't see another season of barely scrapping into the playoffs and another 1st round exit as any more enjoyable than the inevitable rebuilding process. Another "wasted year" as Dirk would say. The team is on the downhill slope fast, no matter if Dirk declines or not. And I'll believe that the Mavs can attract a big name when that actually happens, just like when they said this offseason would be very busy.
I do credit them with injecting some youth, but with the whole "win now" mantra, they needed to sign a difference maker more than anything. Obviously easier said than done.

Blow it Up???? How old are you? We could miss out on playoff basketball for a decade! Trust me it happened, in the 90's, and it sucked!!!!! Lets say we blow it up, are we ever going to be better than Portland? Hell no! We have to keep fighting for this ring each and every year. Our team does not suck. With Kidd running the show, a great X's and O's coach, and Dirk we will be one of the most fundamentally sound basketball teams in the league. That will give us a shot night in and night out.

I can deal with George for another two years. Hopefully he can be more productive for us during the upcoming season. At times I do question why management makes some of the moves or signings they do and why they continue to keep some of the players around. Oh well, it could be worse.
