What move will make you guys legit contenders for next year?


Only guys I can see putting you over the top are Michael Redd or Vince Carter, if you can get either of them with a package of Stack, George and Jones.

But what move in your mind would put you over the top if those are not it?

The only thing I can think of that would actually make the Mavericks a serious threat again would be if we could acquire a star player for a bunch of scrubs like the Lakers, Raptors, and Rockets have been able to do.

I think no move would put us "over the top". the west is too deep for any team to be considered a clearcut number 1.
getting a legit 2 guard without giving up howard or terry (like you proposed, kind of a george, stack, jones deal) would be a nice start in the right direction. but I'm not convinced that a trade like this could happen.

mike miller could help if we got him for that package. but why again would the wolves do that?!

AI for Kidd would probably put us in a better position then we are right now.


His contract is hindering us right now, as well as large contracts that are overpaid by at least 5 million (Stackhouse/Dampier) really don't give us flexibility. I don't see us as any kind of contender with Dampier on this team. If we could pull off a blockbuster involving Stackhouse/Dampier, it'd greatly help us out, the only team that desperately needs a Center is Miami, and if they could somehow stupidly give us Matrix for those two, it'd be a dream. If they'd rather have JET to have a combo-guard so-be it, having Howard+Matrix+Kidd out there is something we can't pass up on if we have the opportunity. We wouldn't have great depth in the Center position, but if we pulled off a trade like that, we could sign Pape Sow, or make another move for a back-up Center. (Like a Rasho for Stackhouse deal). Or even maybe try to pry away Camby, I don't see what the Clippers are thinking with Camby/Kaman, but who knows. Gadzuric, Darko, Nick Collison, Battie, Jason Smith, Pryzbilla, Mikki Moore, Etan Thomas, Yao Ming, SOMEONE who would give us relief behind Diop that would give us something off the bench, that would want Stackhouse's expiring.

Either way, Dampier/Stackhouse and possibly Kidd need to be out, their contracts are hindering more than they're contributing.

We are contenders, both Gerald Green and Antoine Wright will have big years, and we will shock everyone, and make everyone cry and say '' I its not fair, and thought their window is close''.

The new season hasnt even begun and we sure dont look like contenders now.

There are a lot of possibilities this season, we can play like last year, we can fall into pieces or this team emerges as a whole. I think Kidd didnt play bad at all last season when he was here. He made most of the shots he couldnt pass up and when we played very high paced we outscored most of the teams by 10+ a quarter. I dont think hes done at all, but thats just my opinion. I know all the non-Mavs like to shout out that hes lost twenty steps and coachkiller and so on, its always fun to kick someone down when hes lying on the ground i guess.

Im confident that Kidd and Dirk will show up this season at least in the POs. The questionmarks i see are Josh Howard and Brandon Bass. About Josh a lot has been written of and we all can just pray that he hasnt fallen off completely. Im hopeful that Bass will play as great as last year as this is his contract year but a lot of people have praised him last season. He doesnt have a high ceiling IMO, he is one of those guys who play the best when everything is on the line and in the moment when they take things for granted they are quicker out of the NBA than we can count to three. Im not that confident in him and his career as JES, but i wouldnt mind to be wrong of course.

On the other side im very confident that a lot of things will happen in the NBA outside of the Mavs. What if the Pistons start to retool and deal Sheed, RIP and/or Billups. Suddenly all begins to move and new tradescenarios arise. There is not that one trade that puts us over the top NOW, but in a couple of months this could very well happen.

Seriously though, i think if we could somehow manage to trade J-Ho, Bass, and Terry for a really good shooting guard, and a very efficient small forward (for example Jason Richardson, Redd, Mike Miller, Battier) we'd have a chance. A Kidd-Richardson (or Redd)-Battier-Dirk-Diop starting line up is better then what we have right now, but at least it would be a much (?) more efficient team. With that said, i still believe in this team, and i wanna see a last try with Rick on the board, maybe we'll see a completely different team. Who knows, stranger things have happened.

i dont see how Kidd's contract is hindering anything. That's like $18 million or so coming off at the end of the year. Nothing wrong with that. we can even trade him at the deadline if someone wants to shed a lot of salary / blow their squad up (Bucks, Clips, Bobs, Nuggs, etc)

Hell if he plays well you may always be able to get him to take a big pay cut, while grooming a young pg (from next years draft) and he could be here to maybe help sway Lebron over here since Bron has a major woody for Kidd.

You guys may have seen these on here before... But there are about two trades that could make sense for us.

First off, Miami isnt the only squad that needs a Center. Chicago needs one as well. I proposed we send Stackhouse and Dampier for Larry Hughes and Nocioni. Chicago gets pretty good salaries to dump to sign DWade in 2010, plus a Center and a vetern leader in Stack. The Mavs get the backup PG we desperately need that also brings toughness and defense in Houghes. We also get a solid backup for Josh at the 3. Dirk could get some play at the 5. We could pick some scrub to play a few minutes when Diop gets a rest.

Though Im not really sold on trading Josh, the best scenario would be with the Lakers. Josh and Stackhouse for Odom and Farmar. Obviously Odom could play the 3 and Farmar could be a decent PG behind Kidd. The best part of this trade, similar to the Miami trade with the Matrix, would give us about $40 million in expiring contracts to either trade before the deadline or to sign free agents next summer.

Uhhhh, we can get Nocioni for Stack and maybe a second rounder. No way do i throw in Damp for sucky Hughes. Thats messed up. And we waited half the season to get a backup center just to throw our best one away for one of the worst contracts in the league??? Nocioni himself is a bad contract for Chi.

I consider Odom and Sasha Vujacic for Josh and Stack. Odom alone is not even close to the answer to our problems and wont make us a contender.

I guess we'll have to wait til deadline time.

Any trade involving Iverson to Dallas can only hurt us and permanatly put us in rebuilding mode. i don't care if that is Kidd for AI, Howard for AI or our scrubs for AI. I don't want to see AI in a Maverick uniform AT ALL!

Gosh. You guys are missing the POINT, pun intended.

Kidd is about 60 years old, even though I think we will do well under Carlisle. JJ Barea is not the answer to back him up. JET should stay at the 2 and never play PG because he cannot distribute the ball. We have no back up for Kidd. This is by far our biggest hole.

Hughes would be a solid back-up. He can score, play D, and run an offense. No, he isnt the best PG in the League, but that is why he would be the backup.

Damp blows. He is too slow and is not motivated to play. Diop is going to start. We could get some backup Center or play Dirk at the 5. We got Damp to stop Shaq and the bigger Centers. The league is going a little smaller these days. I look for Diop to get most of the minutes and our $11 million/year flop to back him up.

Look, it would be nice to have an all star SG to put on the floor, but unless you are ready to unload Howard, it isnt going to happen.

BTW, Nocioni would be a solid energy guy of the bench that can also score and play D. He is a gritty player and is exactly the type of roll players we should be searching for. He earns about $8 mil per season right now, but his contract was heavily loaded in the front and decreases every year.

I can't believe there are some people around here that still believe we need to sign ANY KIND of a PG. PG is NOT a hole and most certainly not our "biggest" hole. Terry and Barea are BOTH better PGs than Hughes can ever dream to be. Hughes sucks! He may do okay with a Mo Williams or and Iverson PG, but I certainly don't want to see him next to Kidd and will not watch a single Mav game if Rick thinks he can play point here.

And it's just dumb to say Damp is not motivated. He looked great after Kidd got here. And I'll take hit 6.1 (on 64.3% shooting) 7.5 reb and 1.5 blocks in JUST 24 minutes AND DAY OF THE WEEK over Hughes 38% shooting (and 73% of his shots are jacked up in the first 16 sec of the shot clock) and 2.7 APG (for all thiose who thinks he can be a PG).

First off, I would bet a ton that you WOULD watch the Mavs no matter who they have on their roster.

Secondly, JJ Barea shouldnt even be in the league. He is worthless.

Third, You're going to throw Hughes' FG% when we have Kidd who shoots worse?? Of course Hughes isn't a great PG, that's why he would be the BACKUP. If you think Kidd will play anywhere close to 40 minutes per game you are crazy. We already tried JET at the point, it didnt work. JET is a two guard in a PG's body. We have to keep him at the 2. Im not a huge Hughes fan, but he is a pretty decent defensive player and played well in Chicago during the latter part of last year. If you have a better option for us then who would it be?

I was mainly taking on Hughes to get Nocioni. Noc is the key in this trade. Noc is a very high energy guy that plays hard and has a nice all around game. He would be a solid back up to Josh. Although if given some time, Wright could progress. Look, Im looking at backups here, not starters. I think our starting 5 is in pretty good shape.

If you think we can keep Kidd, Dirk, Josh and still get some sort of allstar SG then YOURE CRAZY. Trades have to work for both sides.

BTW, Damp does blow. 6 pts and 7 boards blows when youre making $12 mil per year! I would mind those numbers from Diop making the MLE. We will not be successful until we get rid of Damp and get someone with passion. We should have tried to sign Francisco Elson and get rid of Damp.

kidd will play about 35-38 mins, the rest goes to the JET who filled that role for about 4 years now.
so please stop that hughes nonsense, it's a total waste of time
