07-08 Dallas Mavericks: The Most Overrated?

Post#1 » by braves81 » Wed Aug 27, 2008 1:30 pm

Dallas Mavericks

Ever since Wade and the Heat ate the Mavs for breakfast in 2006, the franchise has been falling. Even a 67-win season in 2007 didn’t change much as Golden State threw them out of the first round. Despite this, many pegged that as just a down season and were confident the Mavs would still be able to make a lot of noise in the loaded Western Conference, with Dirk Nowitzki as the reigning MVP and Josh Howard becoming a threat, as well as Brandon Bass proving his worth.

Halfway through the season, it became apparent how tough the Western Conference was, and how difficult it would be for the Mavs to get out of the West. In a move that screamed desperation, they mortgaged their future for Jason Kidd. It’s been looking like a mistake ever since, and the upstart Hornets handled the Mavs in the first round with ease. In general, people now seem to be realizing that the championship window for the Mavs has closed. They fired a brilliant coach in Avery Johnson and are having major personnel issues in Josh Howard.

What do you think?

I think Nuggets should be the first, and will be the first as well in the coming season

As far as I'm concerned, I thought most of us thought we'd have a rough year after we traded Kidd. Before we made that trade, I believe we were 2nd in the West, and look how we ended up. It's not a product of the other teams getting better either. This year, that may be the case. Regardless, no one overrated us, ever. In 06 when we made it to the Finals, we were the underdogs. When Dirk and the Mavericks got to the Playoffs last in 07 after winning the MVP, questions still loomed about the Mavericks. This past year, NO ONE labeled us as contenders, rightfully so, but who's overrating us?

Avery is a brilliant coach?
I dont know, there were times when i thought he is a good coach but at that time we were one of the most talented teams in the league plus he didnt came in here in a climate of failure. I guess im thankful for the good times under Avery, he was exactly what this team needed at the time he took over and maybe in our best season. But this team played poorly this season and the best player only showed up after being motivated after a trade. That is a bad sign when people think of you as a great motivator. I dont think a brilliant coach is burned out after 2 and a half years.

So if hoops4life.com thinks that Avery is a brilliant coach that may be the reason why they overrated us.

The Heat ate us for breakfast? I thought they were three and a half minutes away from being down 0-3. Anyway, i don't think we have the most overrated team.

We dont have the most overrated team. We did in 2006-2007, but nobody really expected too much after we traded Devin... And whoever wrote this article obviously did not watch very many Mavericks games last season, Avery had to be fired.

The only people who over-rate us are the same people who over-rated Kidd for the last 4 years.

Just a few things Avery is and was a great coach, and if you think otherwise you dont know basketball think about how much this team changed it's mindset and the teams they beat getting to the finals. Not a perfect coach but a great coach. Secondly how is it that we were considered over rated last year ? I think you could throw Phoenix or Denver in that mix. And finally the only person who ate our breakfast in the finals was freaking Bennet Salvatore the worst official in the NBA !

I would say the 06-07 one was the most overrated. We depended on different permutations of isos more than ever and were consistently lazy and dull, yet the roster is revered for (miraculously) winning 67 games.

Avery is a good coach, who thought he was great. If he had continued to develop and improve his offense, he would have been great. I think getting fired was the best thing that could happen to him. He will be better in his next job.
