For those of you who live in Dallas, what do you think of more people coming here from New Orleans thanks to Hurricane Gustav?
I don't want to sound mean, but I've had a lot of bad experiences with many of the survivors
from Hurricane Katrina that came here, I just wanted to know if anyone else feels awkward about it?

It's difficult to dispute that people are people, but there's definitely a broad spectrum among that group. When it comes to quality, I'd say the last evacuees (as a whole) tended toward the lower end of that scale. Maybe it was just the ones I encountered.

My daughter was molested by a criminal that was lost during Katrina, it's pretty tough to let go, I'm not saying that I hate everybody from New Orleans, or that I blame all of New Orleans for it, I don't know, it's just tough that's all.

That is horrible, and I hope he is condemned to a special place in hell and a large cell mate who does not take no for an answer.
When it gets down to it, the same awful thing could have happened to any of our children, regardless of situation. They come across the wrong person at the wrong time. This is a flawed world with bad people in it. Hopefully in this world the law got him and makes him pay, and in the next world he goes to a place where he has things done against his will on an hourly basis.

You're right, that could've happened to anyone's child, regardless of where the guy came from, I try not to hold a bias, I am glad that Texas is such a generous place though, even though we seem to have a less flattering stereotype.
I appreciate the kind words even though I try not to wish violence on others, I hope there
is a special hell for people like that guy.

I agree with most of your comment. Except I hope he pays his debt to society, seeks forgiveness, and truely receives it from the gracious, innocent, peaceful heart which he damaged. But most of all, I pray that the child's heart is, or becomes, gracious, innocent, and peaceful again.

Despite my harsh words, I agree with you. I have had a criminal abuse my trust, and I have been furious with this person. However, I realize that I need to forgive them. Society is going to take care of them. I do feel for blind and his innocent daughter and what she will suffer for many years from this attack.

I dont really like it to be honest. I volunteered help back when Katrina hit and I was still living in Houston and I will never do it again because the people from New Orleans were so ungrateful. I couldnt believe it.

I agree with both Catalyst and DFN, the crazy thing is, my daughter hasn't really needed much time to get past it, I can't stop thinking about it, when she goes to school, to the park, to the freaking mail box ten steps away from my front door.
I also agree with DirkforPres, I remember all of the fights that were started in the school districts, because the kids from New Orleans came over here wanting to fight our kids, this was ridiculous, and though it may not be the mind frame for all of them, it is for a good majority.

It kinda sucks... but Gustav is going to Dallas... so much for trying to scape the storm.

Re: OT: Hurricane Evacuees?
I hate to sound like an ass, or to stereotype a group of people, but when store owners write in front of their stores that "looters will be shot" (or something to that effect), I think it speaks volumes regarding the people who live in that area (obviously not all, not even sure majority, but enough to make it an issue).
Many other places in the world, and in the US have had natural disasters just as bad (if not worse) than the one NO faced and there were none of the things happening in those places that was happening in NO.
It's like instead of banding together and helping each other out in a time of crisis, there are many who went the route of "only the strong survives" or "i'll take care of mine and you take care of yours".

^^ I don't think you sound like an ass, I was worried if what I had to say would rub people the wrong way as well, but you can't help the way you feel, I totally agree with you on the "Looters will be shot" signs, that's ridiculous that in time like that there are people who are still "fending" for themselves, its selfish, arrogant and flat out disgusting, again, not everyone is this way, but 1 is too many people to have this type of mentality.
