Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
Hey guys, I am wondering what Dallas' plan is for Dirk once his contract runs out in 2010. Do you guys plan on offering him an extension before then? Do you think you will want to keep him? He is 30 right now and will be 32 by the time his contract runs out. I am a Cleveland Cavs fan and I am wondering who will be available come the summer of 2010 to add to our team and Dirk seems like someone that "may" be there....assuming you guys want to go in a different direction.

Re: Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
A lot will depend on who is on the team and who owns the team. Most think the mavs will be in full rebuild mode by then. Cuban says he is always threatening to sell the team. I doubt mavs let him go for nothing tho. I am not sure that Dirk wants to be on a team of UFAs and other spares. Kidd should be gone then. In 2010, this team will be at a strange time with many older declining players and RAT, JJB, Foster, Diop, Wright, etc, not quality youth. The older depth will be Howard, Terry, Damp, Kidd (maybe). Stackhouse will be gone, as will Jones, George. Strange team in 2010 and 2011.

I disagree with catalyst. It is too far to tell what could happen by then. Dirk will get an extension and remain a mav unless he is traded for a stud. We could get many new players by then. We could do trades, FAs or anything. We could buy picks. We do have at least one first rounder next year. What if we play like crap this year, trade Kidds contract for a draft pick and young guy. Have two first rounders and a young stud next to dirk and josh. What if they trade Josh for a pick and young PG? There are too many variables in all of this, except saying that Dirk will get an extension.

I think Dirk will be gone in the Summer of 2010.
The team will be too old to contend then, and Dirk will be too old to rebuild around.

Re: Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
It's too early to know what will happen, but there's a distinct possibility that this team will be so far out of contention and so deep in a rebuild that Dirk will seek a championship elsewhere. And if we're trying to rebuild, do we want to sign a 30+ year-old to a big extension?
I brought this point up earlier in the discussion on whether we should trade Dirk as part of a rebuild. Putting off that rebuilding process just makes it more likely that Dirk walks (or is pushed) right out the door in a few years.

I agree with DDansby123.
This is, most likely, our last year in a title contending format. That was sealed and delivered Feb 19, 2008 when Cuban had a wise idea of trading Harris for Kidd, but he screwed us royally with the picks being added to that trade because if we do rebuild next year, it won't do us any good to suck because New Jersey owns our non-lotto protected 1st.
After this year, I hope Kidd is extended one more year and give a push in 2009-10 and IF we are just an average team near the trade deadline, then Howard, Dirk & co. should be traded.

I just dont know where the talent will come from in 10 or 11. Mavs are highly over the cap, and FAs do not sign in Dallas. I see Dirk walking. There are many factors until then, but I do not see where talent will come from in this thing givne the traded picks and the harris trade.

Re: Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
you've got just under 50m committed to Dirk, JET, Howard, Diop
so you'll be under the cap (assuming it goes up the next couple years)
you've got 13m to Damp that is unguaranteed and you can either waive him or trade him or make him part of a S&T
Howard's 11.8m expiring - you could S&T with him
JET's 9.8m is essentially an expiring as his 2011/2012 salary is unguaranteed - again another S&T option
in essence I think there are ways to get a FA here but it is probably gonna be through S&T
and sending expirings/unguaranteeds out for long term talent contract

Good to see the graphic entertainer. Long time no see.
My point is that mavs have never signed a significant FA. Circumstances may dictate that mavs can be the only locale to go to given the current salary structure. S&T are always good options, but you still have to convince the FA and team that dal will be a good place to come and win.

From what Dirk has said recently, he will not sign an extension. Especially if the Mavs continue their decline.
Edit: sounds too definitive, but the impression I got was that he is very much thinking about going elsewhere or even retiring.

Re: Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
I doubt Dirk ever plays for another team outside of the NBA other than Dallas. If we do happen to lose him in the summer of 2010, I think we should put all our chips in to bring Chris Bosh home to Dallas.

Re: Dirk Nowitzki beyond 2010
Do you guys think Dirk would go to a different NBA team?
Obviously Cleveland isn't a hot-spot for free-agents, but I am thinking that Dirk is a guy that we "could" land for a few reasons...
1. He would want a championship badly and Cleveland could offer him the best chance to step-in and really compete from day 1.
2. Dirk wouldn't have to be "the man" in Cleveland. He would have a very limited spotlight on him. He would also get some VERY easy looks at the hoop with LeBron on the wing.
2. Cleveland is probably one of the few teams that has the money to offer Dirk what he would want and we would probably be one of the few teams that would be willing to GIVE him that money. We could probably give him a deal that starts out at $13-14 million. How many other teams will have the money to offer that , and how many teams would WANT to add a 32 year old PF a 4 year deal worth about $56 million? I can't imagine too many teams would want to do that.

Do you think LeBron would come to DAL instead of Dirk going to CLE?
