Rick Carlisle’s promise of full-bore basketball — fast-breaking offense and bare-knuckle defense — has left at least one open-ended question: How will Jerry Stackhouse and his high-mileage lower extremities keep pace?
"Stack can still run, his knees are fine," Carlisle said after Day 2 of training camp Wednesday at SMU’s Crum Basketball Center. "Look, he’s a pro, he knows how to play. He knows the game."
Stackhouse’s knees didn’t fail him for 24 missed games last season. Hamstring and groin strains did. After 13 seasons, 908 total games and with his 34th birthday 34 days away, even Stackhouse, mostly an invaluable sixth man in his four seasons with the Mavs, isn’t sure where he’ll eventually land in Carlisle’s rotation.
"It could very well be the same role, it could be a lesser role, it could be a greater role," he said.
What Stackhouse recognized after an ailing and disappointing end to last season — and then especially after Carlisle, his coach for two seasons in Detroit, was hired — is he had to upgrade his off-season conditioning.
Stackhouse admitted that he entered recent camps in sufficient, but not stellar shape. Talks with Carlisle throughout the summer convinced Stackhouse to put his durability into his own hands.
"I probably short-changed myself a little bit by not being in the best shape as possible because I felt like I could come off the bench and play 18 to 20 minutes without being in top-notch shape," Stackhouse said. "With him coming in and putting the onus on me, just getting my butt in shape, I did that for the last three months and we’ll see where we’re at."

Do we really want Stack on the floor more?

i'm annoyed that the guy purposely was not in the best shape he could have been. does he not realize that can lead to injuries?

Nothing good in that article.
Stack is done. And if he was slacking off because he was not starting, he has been done for a while.

Re: Dallas Mavericks' Stackhouse hopes increased durability
What would be great for the Mavs is if they could limit Stack to about 8-10 minutes a night. Stack coming of the bench and slashing to the rim would at least give the Mavs someone who could do that on a limited basis. The problem is the Mavs don't have a lot of options at the SG and I wonder if he gets overused again.

His value will go up the closerit gets to the trade deadline. After the trade deadline it goes back down since he is just a $3.25 mil exiring next year (not qite the 7 mil at the TDL).jwa1107 wrote:here's hoping he'll build up his trade value before mid-Feb....
His durability and and playing time has nothing to due with his value.

Re: Dallas Mavericks' Stackhouse hopes increased durability
^^^ only in the sense of 'explaining' a trade in the press wherein the other GM would say
"Stackhouse has shown he is durable and can still play a major role on our team and provide veteran leadership."
If he doesn't play much, is injured, or plays like crap the other GM has a harder time spinning the trade

Re: Dallas Mavericks' Stackhouse hopes increased durability
Stack has no important role on this team after the Mavs acquired Kidd. The only thing he provided before the trade was some veteran leadership. He would be a good fit on a team like Portland now.
