I was thinking over the day what are possible moves Dallas can do to get the Mavs up there again without trading Dirk, .... I'm a Dirk homer i know.

Well, i lost faith that the pieces we have here can get us great value in return to make us contender. So the only other way is to either tank this season and make moves during offseason or in deed let Dirk go for rebuilding pieces.

I will go the rebuilding route in this thread.

Goal is to have a couple of good players around Dirk and to have enough cap space to make a move for big time FA during offseason. The problem is that we are that far over the cap, to actually have good players around Dirk they essentially have to be on their rookie contract for 2 remaining years.

Lets go:
1st trade
Dallas:
Josh Howard, Erick Dampier, Jason Terry

Phi:
Andre Miller (waived, we dont need him), Thadeus Young (want him, really bad), Samuel Dalembert, fillers (Donyell Marshall, Theo Ratliff, Kareem Rush)

Reasoning:
We do it to get Thadeus somehow, but why would Phi ever trade him?
The biggest problem for the 76ers is their outside shooting right now, the JET is good at that. Elton Brand is up there when it comes to age, it makes sense to get good players that arent very young anymore. The Damp-Dalembert swap is in there to make numbers work. All fillers will be waived.

2nd trade
Dallas:
Brandon Bass, Diop, Devean George, Jose Barea

Atlanta:
Thabo Sefolosha, Drew Gooden(waived)

I only trade Bass because he's expiring anyway, we can go after him next offseason anyway. Bulls do it to get another center, Bass fills in at PF nicely. Thabo is expandable with the glut of guards the Bulls have.

That leaves under contract:
Dirk
Dalembert
Young
2 million of Jerry Stackhouse(of cource waived) **maybe we can trade him for an expiring
Antoine Wright
Thabo Sefolosha
Shawne Williams
optionally salary of 1st rounder(if not traded)

Looking to resign:
Green for 3 million (hopefully)

So to calc our total sallary, there are multiple things i dont know anything about

Maybe we can grab Kidd with the MLE as no other team is going to offer more.

Well there's no way Philadelphia does that. They are extremely high on Young, and value him as much as Howard. Dalembert is obviously better than Dumpster. Andre Miller is better than Terry.

Right now, I am in the mindset to not add any salary past 2010 unless it is an absolute steal (and not because of the FA market, but because that is when most of our contracts expire). Dalambert at 10 mil per year is not a steal. I'd rather keep Dampier's 2010 (not to mention he is outplaying Dalembert thus far this year) and I would not add Howard to that. I did, however, think about Howard for Thadeus Young and a trade exception when they had the room to do it, but that was in a dropping salary while getting a younger, lesser talent with potential mentality.

I'd pass on the Thabo trade too if we have to waive Gooden. The clearing of Diop's salary is starting to look like a posative.

Dallas and Dampier haters everywhere! Despite the fact that Dampier is outplaying Dalembert in every single aspect of the game this year, I will give you younger and "slightly" better based of previous years, but "obviously" is, well, a JOKE and not any funnier than your lame name calling.

Hell, even last year they were very similar per min; difference being Damp had better FG%, and Dalembert had better FT%. Damp slightly better passer, Dalembert slightly better blocker. Equal reb and steals.

Don't get me wrong, I'm not trying to hype up Dampier or put down Dalembert, but Sammy is one of the most over rated players on realgm...that or Dampier is one of the most under-rated...or both.

The Phi part only works because we waive Andre Miller after the trade so he can resign with Phi. So Phi trades essentially Young (who is untouchable otherwise) for Josh Howard and Jason Terry.

I think Dalembert and Damp are not that far apart, Dalembert is younger though.

I think both trades are fair in that light. Of course we look really bad on papar after that, but we tank this season anyway and add a high pick and a bigtime FA in the offseason.

All the exceptions get added to the salary of a team if the team is under the cap. Its too hard to get under the cap with Dirk remaining on the team and still have enough room to go after FAs.

CO - Although I don't agree with the details of your plan, the general idea is a good one. In fact, I posted something similar in the Orlando game thread.

Since this FO is determined to win with Dirk, the best approach at this point is to dump all of the salary that we can, even if it means that we get less talent in return. The idea is to get far enough under the cap to get the RIGHT players around Dirk. In other words, improve quality, not quantity. If we can resign Kidd to a reasonable contract (MLE) and then go after guys like Marion, Artest or someone of their caliber, it would be an improvement.
This team simply has too much mediocre talent and not the right chemistry to win.

If they aren't going to go the rebuild route by trading Dirk, they might as well get rid of the garbage and dead weight around him.

No way Philadelphia trades Thaddeus AND Andre. The Chicago trade is awful for Dallas too.. They hsould be looking at Hinrich if they must do a trade with Chicago

I would so love VC on this team, but he is too expensive at this point for this franchise.

But thats why i want Turkoglu on this team so **** badly, he does exactly the same like Pierce or Carter at the end of games:
He is clutch, he can handle the ball every time (NO, HE WONT THROW THE DAMN BALL TO THE OPPOSING TEAM AFTER A TIMEOUT; SRY FOR CAPS)
He is not afraid to drive to the hole and he has the courtvision to kick it out if others like Terry or Dirk are open.
I want him here with Dirk, either as a FA or via trade i dont care.

So my plan puts us in a better position in that regard IMO:

Dalembert
Dirk
Turkoglu
Young
Kidd

Thats a kickass lineup, with Green off the bench. But is this team deep enough? We would need players like Marbs and other tall FA for the min.
Dont forget this team would have a top prospect on the bench!

Firing donnie must be part of any rebuild plan.
