Best Scenario for Stackhouse?

Post#1 » by jtg41 » Sun Nov 23, 2008 11:57 pm

The Mavericks and Jeff Schwartz, the agent for Jerry Stackhouse, are working on possible trade scenarios. But nobody expects anything to start heating up until Dec. 15, the date that players signed in the off-season become eligible to be traded. ... The Mavericks don't play again until Tuesday and were given Saturday to rest. Carlisle said they will have two hard days of practice starting today. ... Lest the Mavericks get too giddy about their four-game winning streak, Carlisle provided some perspective. "We're trying to dig out of a hole," he said. "We're one game away from being .500." In other words, they still need another win just to be average. The good news is that they are only two games behind the teams tied for second place in the Western Conference.

What's the best we can get for him? Could we get someone in return with enough talent to solidify the hole we have at the two spot? I dream of getting someone like G-Wallace or Kaman (without giving up J-Ho or JET) but that would probably take the likes of a package with a base of Stack & Diop.

I didn't realize that only about $2M of Stack's contract is guaranteed for next season (according to Marc Stein), which makes him almost as good as an expiring contract. Presumeably, that would make him more valuable to a rebuilding team that has some veteran talent with longer contracts. That wouldn't be my first choice, as I'm squarely in the Rebuild Now camp, but we may be able to get an upgrade at SG. Of course, that wouldn't take much. If we were to package one of our young guys with him (particularly Bass or Green), we could probably net a pretty solid contributor.

Then again, rebuilding teams don't usually want vets on their last legs.

Wow! We have been making threads for quite a while now mentioning Stack's "virtual expiring" During the Harris trade, Stack's 2 mil was the key to the 1st rumored trade over Hassell's contract. Everyone in the leagure knew that then.

I see 1 of 3 types of transactions

1) Stack buyout with his 2009-10 $2 mil negotiated out

2) A fair player on a 2 year deal from a team looking to get under the tax next year (i.e. Antonio Daniels or Cutino Mobley-each mentioned on the trade forum)

3) A HUGE upgrade for anyone on a 3 year deal...they would have to be worth giving up out 2010 cap space.

I don't see the Mavs getting much for Stack at all. Unless someone needs filler because they need a Center (Diop,Damp) or a combo-guard (JET) Stack probably ends up whining his way into a buyout.

Would New York take Bass+Stack for Malik Rose ? Rose is old also but could add some toughness to the Mavs. With the play of Singleton the Mavs could do without Bass. I am not sure if the Knicks have the minutes Stack is wanting. It will be tough to find any trade of much value considering Stack can't even stay on the active roster.

Why the hell would we want an old Malik Rose who is not even as good as Bass? I would rather get nothing for Stack than take on Malik Rose who sucks now.

Would Stack/Diop/Green or Bass to the Bobcats for Wallace and Mahamad be fair for both teams?

I would take Curry if we had a chance to exchange Stack+filler for Eddie Curry. I know he is not perfect but we would finally have an option at Center that can score. I think the 3 headed monster of Damp/Diop/Curry should be able to cover most situations.

If we can score from the Center position that will leave many more open shots for Dirk, J-Ho and Terry. And I could see Kidd getting the ball to Curry for many easy baskets.

There is no reason to spend, what, 25 million between 3 centers and still have serious serious problems. Curry needs to be a 15-minute per game backup on a good defensive team that could use scoring off the bench. Anything more and your in trouble. With Dirk at PF, Curry should not really even be a option.

I will put my crack pipe down. I just remembered the toughness Rose brought to San Antonio. I thought he might have more gas left in the tank than Stack and is an expiring contract anyway.

Rose ran out of gas a few years back. Bass >>>> Rose. No need to trade Stack + Bass for Rose. I would not even trade Stack for Rose straight up because of the new-found respect for Stack who is taking the benching professionally...plus we would not be abke to turn around and Rose+ because of the 30 day wait which could hender other trades.

And Curry eliminates our chance for a Max player in 2010. In fact, he limits our ability to a MLE player. I would not even touch a 2 year Curry deal because of the tax...that is until he proves he can be a shadow of his former self.
