Totally hypothetical trade (not suggesting one)

Post#1 » by JES12 » Wed Dec 3, 2008 8:46 am

Jason Terry for Kirk Hinrich

Staight up....would you do it?

I thought I knew the answer, but I realize that I don't. This would have been an automatic "yes, but the Bulls wouldn't" response, but check this out....

I know the stats can be off in any give year or small sample size of games, but this is what I'm really taliking about:

...........................Terry......................Hinrich
2008-09........31yo, $9,196,000..........27yo, $10,000,000
2009-10........32yo, $9,075,000..........28yo, $9,500,000
2010-11........33yo, $10,000,000*........29yo, $9,000,000
2011-12........34yo, $11,000,000**.......30yo, $8,500,000
2012-13..............Free Agent...............Free Agent

* not sure the exact amount
**Only 5 mil guaranteed

He's not really a rebuilding chip, but he is younger by 4 (ONLY...WOW) years.

he is a good player and if we let kidd expire he could be our starting pg. not very likely to happen with kidd still on board

If only Terry would be a better defender

I'm also surprised that Hinrich is only 4 years younger. Hinrich has regressed, i dont think Dallas would touch this, especially with Terry being a model citizen, Mav at heart and team captain.

I would not consider this trade. I think Kidd has 2-3 more years left if he decides to resign at a much reduced salary. Terry is a big time player better than Iverson. Terry has taken his game up a notch this year under Carlisle. The Mavs should keep Terry and look for a point guard to develop behind Kidd. Barea is capable of being the Mavs backup long term. In addition I am not much of a Hinrich fan. 8-) Hypothetically NO!

BLKMN - I'm interested to see if Terry will keep this up once Howard returns.

Terry has stepped up his game and is becoming a true leader but that does scare me a bit.

The good thing about this though is that Terry is doing most of his damage in the 4th (averaging 11pts) and Josh is a "first 3 quarters" guy. That alone could be good chemistry but I still think we are a good player or 2 from being serious contenders.

I would do that deal because I'm not real crazy about resigning Kidd unless we are able to do it at a bargain price.

However, we would actually be giving up Kidd and Terry for Hinrich which isn't a pleasant thought.

Now if we could make another trade involving Kidd that would net us some youth, I'd be all for that.
Hinrich would probably be a good decent fit with Dirk. However, I'm a biased Jayhawker so my opinion probably shouldn't count...loved watching the guy when he played at Kansas.

Show of hands ... those who think that trading Jason Terry for Kirk Hinrich really makes us a better basketball team now or in the next 2 years.

Show of hands ... those who think that Kirk Hinrich is the pg that can take us back to the finals in the next few years.

Kirk is not a better player offensively or defensively. Well, he isn't as good offensively, and his only advantage on defense is that he's slightly bigger. He is a middle of the pack point guard. JET, for all of his short-comings (personally, I don't think he has all that many), is a GREAT 3rd guard in a quality 3 guard rotation. He isn't the problem. The problem is that we do not have another quality sg on this team. JET's only real problem as far as I'm concerned is that he's paid a little bit too much, and it affects our ability to invest in another quality guard. That's it. But Kirk isn't that much cheaper.

If we can use JET as the main piece in getting a better 2 way sg, let's do it. I'm all for it. Of course, then we've got the issue of replacing his contribution off the bench, which is considerable.

Trading JET is tricky, IMO. Maybe the most delicate potential trade on the team. You move him for the wrong piece, and you could really screw things up. It's weird, too, because of all players on the team, he seems to be the one that everyone wants to get rid of.

Jason Terry is far more beneficial and Kirk's value is at a career low.

I just can't see the Mavs doing this unless they were getting something else of pretty good value.
