Mark Cuban looking to the future

The Mavericks will have important decisions to make between now and 2010, including at the end of the season when Jason Kidd’s $21.3 million contract comes off the books. Depending on how the Mavericks fare in the playoffs, Cuban will have to decide how much he might want to offer Kidd, and Kidd could also test the free-agent market. Cuban said he is not against taking on a contract of a player from another team, even if it runs past 2010. "It depends on the player," Cuban said. "If we get a bargain, we will. But it’s got to be a difference-maker."
Mark Cuban was sitting near the Mavericks’ bench Friday night in New Jersey when Devin Harris was taken out of the game and fans expressed their appreciation for Cuban by chanting several times: Thank you, Cub-an. "That was really funny," Cuban said Sunday at the Mavericks game in Washington against the Wizards. "I thought it was hysterical." While it has become extremely popular in all parts of the NBA world to criticize Cuban and the Mavericks for trading Harris, Cuban remains steadfast in his belief that it was a good deal for Dallas. "There’s only one goal every year and that’s to win a championship," Cuban said. "And if you’re not going to win it right now, what puts your team in the best position flexibility-wise going forward? That was the question and [the trade] was the answer."

I thought this part was interesting.
"Our commitment to our fans is that we’ll never be a team with 40-something wins for more than one year," Cuban said. "We’re either going to be really, really good or we’re going to be really, really bad [and get a high draft pick]."

That's the most hypocritical damage control rhetoric I read in a while. If you want flexibility, you did the single most worst thing you can do by trading our 2010 pick which prevents of from rebuilding by tanking after Kidd expires and prevents us from retooing by not being able to trade our 2009 pick with Stack.

^ I think he meant cap flexibility, but point taken.
Regardless, his comments about not being a 40-win team for more than a year are absurd. Unless you're damn committed to a rebuild (along the lines I've suggested recently), you can't reasonably expect to rebuild in a year's time. And nothing this FO has done since Cuban's arrival suggests that they will ever totally commit to anything.

I think the most interesting part is when Cuban affirms that: "We can do whatever we want to do [in 2010]," Cuban said. "We’ll basically have Dirk [Nowitzki] and Jet [Jason Terry] on the books. Other guys can opt out and we can sign them after the fact."
And Diop and his 6$ mill? It seems that he betrayed the subconscious and Diop is going to be traded before the deadline or in the summer.

I wonder if he has a Greg Buckner like contract.
I asked on the CBA board to see if they can shed any light.
