Can the starting rotation stay hot? Can Slick Rick maintain his 1.412 OPS? Can La Russa get along with anybody?

This road trip to Milwaukee and Chicago presents the latest great opportunity for the 2007 Cardinals. The Brewers and Cubs keep inviting the Cardinals to join the NL Central race. At this point it would be rude not to accept.

Nice start, Mizzou. This is getting interesting. I'd love to spend September watching a bid for a playoff spot.

Now the reigning World Series champions have clawed their way back into the division race. With Tuesday night's victory, St. Louis trails Milwaukee by 4 1/2 games, and second-place Chicago by three.

La Russa said he is proud of the way his players have handled adversity, but isn't going to get too excited about their recent progress until they having a winning record. With the victory, St. Louis is 56-60.

"When that happens, then you look around and say, 'Hey, where are we?,"' La Russa said.

Huge win yesterday....I watched the first inning and it was a nightmare, after that my eyes were closing (3 in the morning here) and I went to bed. I woke up and we got 19 hits, Wells got the Win and we're only four and a half behind. Oh, and also Cubbies lost

We're playing good baseball. We just look like a better team than the Brewers right now. Emphasis on the "right now," because with our crazy-quilt roster things could change in a hurry.

I'm going to try not to get too excited unless/until we reach .500. That's what Tony says I should do.

Is it me or is Brendan Ryan just really freakin' good?

Just about anything looks good after four months of Adam Kennedy's mediocre defense and .219 hitting with no power.

I thought the "book" on Ryan was that he was supposed to be a good-field, no-hit guy who could maybe someday be a halfway decent bench player. But he's looked like a respectable hitter so far. Granted, it's been all of 69 major-league at bats.

I figure he's going to be on the opening-day roster next year for sure. He might even start if Kennedy is hurt/ineffective or if we don't re-sign Eckstein. Frankly, I hope we don't re-sign Eckstein. We're almost assuredly stuck with Kennedy though.

Just like old times: Albert, Rolen and Edmonds have gone deep as we lead in the eighth inning, 8-2.

Nice relief appearance by Isringhausen, silencing a Brewers rally with two quick strikeouts. Birds win 8-3! Cubs trailing Cincy again, but look like they may be rallying.

Edit: Cubs catch the Reds, then Reds score two to win 11-9. Yowsa!

Pineiro wants a piece of you in the World Series, only we're afraid you won't make the big dance.

(amazing how a few wins can bring out the trash talking -Regarding Pinero, go figure...I can only say it's baseball and as fans we seldom really never know anything for sure.)

Cards beat Brewers...Cubs lose...this week is following Disney Studios' "The Rick Ankiel Story" script very closely.

If all goes according to Disney Studio's plan, then it will be a nip-and-tuck three-way race for the rest of the season, with Slick Rick hitting a dramatic home run a couple of times per week. OK, maybe add in leaping catches at the right-field wall and gunning dudes out at the plate from 400 feet away too. That would make a nice little montage leading into the playoffs.

The NLDS and NLCS will both be won through multi-homer onslaughts by Rick, and the World Series will end with a walk-off by #24, after all other pitching options have been exhausted and he pitches shutout ball for nine innings in relief in Game Seven.

And it WILL go according to Disney's plan, I have no doubts. Disney Studios is the most powerful entity imaginable and secretly rules the universe.

It's gonna be sweet winning back-to-back championships and listening to American League fans piss and moan all winter again.

Nice little sweep here, it just sucks that the Cubs are going to win today, oh well. Huge 4 game series starting with them tomorrow.
