"ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Josh Hancock, a key member of the bullpen that helped the St. Louis Cardinals win the World Series last season, was killed in a car crash early Sunday.

The Cardinals said they were told of the 29-year-old reliever's death by the St. Louis Police Department. The team's home game against the Chicago Cubs on Sunday night was postponed.

The team said the accident happened in St. Louis, but no other details were disclosed. The Cardinals and police are expected to make a statement this afternoon at Busch Stadium.

Hancock has pitched for four major league clubs. He went 3-3 in 62 regular-season appearances for the Cardinals last season and pitched in three postseason games. He was 0-1 with a 3.55 ERA in eight games this season.

Hancock joined the Cardinals before the 2006 season. He has pitched for Boston, Philadelphia and Cincinnati.

I got home earlier today from an out-of-town trip and heard the news. There's not really anything I can say any different from the rest of you. This is just terrible. Be careful on the roads, everyone.

Looks like this could take an ugly turn. We might as well get out in front of it.

Right now it is still only hearsay. Whatever the real truth is has not yet been established, and will come out only with more time, if it is to come out at all.

Discussion is welcome here, but please be sensitive and cautious about leaping to conclusions.

I hope that it is not true. I also have found this news clip, that caught his vehicle in the wreck. The truck took one heck of a beating.

Looks like the truth turns out to be pretty bad.

I'm sure that Hancock was a fun-loving guy who meant no harm. But he did a really stupid, irresponsible thing in driving a car on the interstate with an alcohol level nearly twice the legal limit. Too many people have died from alcohol-related traffic accidents. Including lots of completely innocent, sober people who just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. It's fortunate that Hancock did not kill anyone else.

For me, today's police report is the closure to a very sad story, although I'd like to think that the Cardinals organization and anyone else touched by Hancock's death will intensify their efforts to end drunk driving.

Can I take back what I said?
He broke not 1, not 2, but 3 laws that night.
