Cardinals RHP Carpenter makes first rehab start! Roughed up, but who cares. Here's Yahoo's brief account.
July 3, 2007
PALM BEACH, FLORIDA (TICKER) -- The St. Louis Cardinals' Chris Carpenter made his first rehab start Tuesday on his way back from elbow surgery.
Carpenter started for the Cardinals' Class A Palm Beach team against Brevard County and got knocked around, facing 11 batters over 1 1/3 innings. The righthander yielded five runs - three earned - and five hits while striking out two. He did not issue a walk in taking the loss.
The 2005 Cy Young award winner started on opening day for St. Louis, lasting six innings against the New York Mets, but has not pitched since.
Carpenter's return cannot come soon enough for St. Louis, which ranks 27th in the major leagues in team ERA.

I can't imagine he was going all out. Just throwing strikes to get his rhythm back.
The big news will be possibly today or tomorrow when we find out how his elbow reacts.

Thanks for the update. Our pitching could get much better soon.

News about next rehab start for Carpenter? He'll pitch again at Palm Beach or he's gonna throw in Springfield?

Not sure, he is still on Palm Beach's roster still so I would guess them. But we'll know in a couple days because his 5 day rest is on Friday.

Thanks! At this point, the return date would be when, mid-august? I hope he can be with the team earlier, we desperately need him to boost a poor rotation...

I'm not really sure when he is due to be back, but if everything goes well the next time he pitches (which should be in a couple days) he could very well be back with the team by the 20th of this month. That is the most optimistic look at things though. I would expect him to be ready by the beginning of August though.
Heres what he has pretty much done lately, with little reports:

Really bad news:

Our top pitcher in my opinion will never pitch again this year. We'll see him in 2008...imho.

Yeah, not good. To be honest I wouldn't mind it if neither Mulder or Carpenter didn't pitch this year at all. Got a lot of money invested in Carpenter, just not worth it.
