Monday: David Wells vs. Braden Looper

Tuesday: Jake Peavy vs. Anthony Reyes

Wednesday: Greg Maddux vs. Kip Wells

Thursday: Chris Young vs. Joel Pineiro

Thoughts: Well San Diego has the pitching advantage in every game, except maybe the first one. So this could be another ugly series.

In the first game Wells is a lefty, and we never hit lefties, so I'd give San Diego the advantage there too.

Three guys with ERAs over 5...and the Padres don't even get to feast on the new bum we just picked off the scrap heap (Piniero). This is the worst Cardinals starting rotation I can ever remember.

Hey look, Reyes pitches a gem and he gets a loss. WHAT A SHOCK!

The guy leads all of our starting pitching in WHIP and has a 1-11 record.

Granted, Reyes has gotten abysmal run support all season, but last night we got shut down by Jake Peavy, what else did you expect? Nobody scores on that guy this year.

WHIP is a misleading stat if you can't get anybody out once someone gets on base. That's been Reyes' problem this year, he has to figure out how to get himself out of trouble once he gets into trouble.

I didn't see last night's game, but it did sound like Reyes pitched well. Hopefully he'll be able to chalk this season up as a painful learning experience and come back strong for us next year. The WHIP does offer hope that the talent is there to be a pretty good starter.

I have watched every start of Reyes' this year. I chalk it up some big innings, and simply horrible luck. When I say horrible luck, I mean guys hitting good pitches, bloops, errors, seeing eye singles. I agree, he does need to do a better job of getting out of a 1 or 2 out jam with runners on. But more often then not, guys are hitting good pitches at the worst possible times. Hence the bloops, seeing eye singles.

For instance, he pitched great last night. He had them off balance all night. The only run he gave up was in the 7th, 2 outs, man on 3rd. I believe it was a 2 strike count, Reyes thows a breaking ball which would of bounced to Molina, Bard drops the bat at his ankles for a base hit to right.

Of course Peavy is an absolute stud, and I knew it was going to be tough. But we had plenty of chances and couldn't come up with anything.

I think our main goal now is finish this season at least .500, we can do it but we have to help our pitcher in the growing process, mainly Reyes and Wainwright. I can't understand what's happening to Maroth, Mulder hopefully could rejoin the rotation before the end of this season and, if he does, we have 3 out of 5 spots for next year's starting rotation. 2 empty spots and this is a gm job.

Sounds like Mulder is on the verge of making his first rehab start. If all goes well, he'll make a few appearances for the Cardinals before the season is over. I hope he'll be solid for us next year.

Also, here's a laudatory piece on Reyes:

I like reading that the Padres were 0-8 with runners in scoring position before they got their one run off of Reyes.

I hope he can figure things out; we REALLY need for him to become a solid part of our rotation, moreso for future seasons than what's left of this one.

Amazing, only 6 games back. Just imagine if we didn't suck against bad teams the 2 previous series. Seriously though, it's pretty amazing how were somehow only 6 games back with how horrible we've played, I think we've been quite lucky, but oh well gotta have luck.

No doubt. Check out the Cards run differential.

It ain't luck, it's the genius of Tony La Russa. :D

Kip Wells is beginning to make himself interesting. I would have thought there was no way in hell he would be back with the Cardinals next season--hell, I thought there was no way he'd make it to the end of THIS season. But four of his last five starts have been quality starts--he has a 2.48 ERA over his last five starts.

Do we bring him back next year if he keeps this up through the end of September? He should get another 10 starts or so. I still need a lot of convincing, but at least it seems possible that Dave Duncan may have been right about Wells, except that it took a little longer to turn him around than expected.

Only six games back...nah, not falling for it again.   Get to .500., or get in a tie for first in the Central, and maybe I'll dare to dream some more.

WOO HOO!!! Most fun I've had all season.

We've found our winning formula...play teams that can't hit a lick, and give Rick Ankiel four chances to go yard. The Cubs and Brewers are toast now.
