ST. LOUIS -- The St. Louis Cardinals announced today that they have acquired infielder/outfielder Russell Branyan from the Philadelphia Phillies in exchange for a player-to-be-named later.

The left-handed swinging Branyan, 31, has compiled a lifetime mark of .229 with 120 home runs and 298 RBI in 695 games with Cleveland, Cincinnati, Milwaukee, Tampa Bay, San Diego and Philadelphia. He enjoyed a 20-homer season for the Indians in 2001 and combined for a career-high 24 homers with the Indians and Reds in 2002.

I actually really like Branyan and think this is a great move if the PTBNL is another crap prospect like in the Maroth trade.

Is Rolen really out for the season? That's what I thought I read somewhere else.

Yeah he is, I believe he will be undergoing surgery to remove some scar tissue from his shoulder.

Pretty nice pickup considering the circumstances. Way ta go, Jocketty!

But I'm pleased to see LaRussa stick with Brendan Ryan at third base. The kid is on fiyah these days.

Which is odd because if you add up his 2004-2006 stats he has a .847 OPS. And a .894 OPS against righties, which is pretty good. Hopefully LaRussa will give him a lot of chances against the righties though.

Branyan had a tough game last night.

He whiffed on a big opportunity in the eighth against Arizona. Couldn't make contact. Couldn't get the runner home. Also made an error which led to an early run. He's going to have to do better down the stretch for us to be competitive.
