TB Edwin Jackson, RHP (0-8, 8.20)
Devil Rays (30-37) @ ARI Livan Hernandez, RHP (5-4, 4.20)
Diamondbacks (40-30)
Scouting Report:
Rays: Jackson appears to be on the bubble. Wednesday night against the Padres he retired just one batter of the eight he faced in the first inning before getting lifted. In the process, the right-hander allowed five hits, two walks and two home runs to stake the Padres to a 5-0 lead. Jackson is out of options, and the Rays like his potential, but given the consistency of his poor outings, there's a good chance he could be on his way out of the starting rotation.
D-backs: Hernandez had an outing to forget against the Bronx Bombers at Yankee Stadium. The right-hander lacked command and allowed seven runs on nine hits while lasting just four innings. Six of the seven runs came via the long ball with Jorge Posada hitting a solo shot, Alex Rodriguez a two-run blast and Hideki Matsui capping things with a three-run homer. Hernandez deserved a better fate in his start previous start as he held the Giants to three runs over seven innings and departed the game with a 4-3 lead. Closer Jose Valverde blew a save in the ninth and Hernandez walked away with a no-decision.
Tuesday, June 19 Chase Field | 9:40 PM ET
TB J.P. Howell, LHP (1-1, 3.60)
Devil Rays (30-37) @ ARI Doug Davis, LHP (4-8, 3.70)
Diamondbacks (40-30)
Scouting Report:
Devil Rays: The first batter Howell faced in his last outing hit a ball to the fence, but was out. The next walked. The third Padre doubled, and after that, Howell was air-tight. He allowed just three more hits during the following seven innings. He had retired 13 of 15 at one point, but none of that mattered when the Rays failed to push anything more than a run across in his support. He gave up a leadoff double in the eighth and left after 94 pitches, three walks and two punch outs. Howell won his only career start against Arizona, and has worked to a 1.80 ERA against the D-backs.
D-backs: Davis has struggled in his last two starts, both of which were against American League East powers. In his last outing he allowed four runs on six hits and five walks in just five innings to the Yankees in New York. In his start before that he also did not have good control as he gave up five runs on six hits and five walks over four innings against the Red Sox at Chase Field. The poor outings snapped a string of three very good starts for Davis, who had allowed just four runs in 22 2/3 innings in that span.
Wednesday, June 20 Chase Field | 3:40 PM ET
TB James Shields, RHP (6-1, 3.30)
Devil Rays (30-37) @ ARI Micah Owings, RHP (4-1, 3.84)
Diamondbacks (40-30)
Scouting Report:
Rays: Shields could not overcome a four-run first inning by the Rockies on Friday night and saw his perfect season go by the board. Despite the Rockies' first-inning barrage, which saw them hit back-to-back home runs, Shields kept his composure and retired 14 consecutive batters after the second of the consecutive long balls.
D-backs: Owings has gotten no-decisions in his past two starts, but very easily could have gotten wins in both. He allowed just three runs over six innings to the Orioles at Camden Yards his last time out, but had departed the game by the time Arizona rallied for a 7-3 win. In his start before that, the right-hander turned a 3-2 lead over the Red Sox at Chase Field to the bullpen, but the 'pen couldn't not hold it. The largest crowd in franchise history and facing the Red Sox did not faze the rookie, who has continued to display remarkable poise. Last year, he was a combined 16-2 at Double-A and Triple-A.
