Texas Rangers seek center fielder

Post#1 » by HMFFL » Tue Nov 6, 2007 2:58 pm

As part of the Texas Rangers' "build-it-yourself" plan, the days when the club would go to the general managers meetings, the kickoff to the off-season, attempting to make over the entire team are gone. The Rangers' new off-season philosophy is to concentrate on making significant improvements only in those areas where significant improvements are available.

The Rangers have used 12 opening-day center fielders in 14 seasons at the stadium, and unless they reunite with free agent Kenny Lofton, which is unlikely, the list will grow to 13 in 2008. The Rangers have started 44 players in center, led by Tom Goodwin with 281 starts, in the last 14 years. No other AL club's predominant starting center fielder started fewer than 374 games. No other club used more than 40 players in center.

While center field is the top priority, the Rangers are also considering first basemen and veteran relievers. Because the market is thin, however, Daniels might wait until later in the winter to address those issues. The Rangers have touched base with the representatives for Mike Lamb and could also look into acquiring Kevin Millar. More likely, the Rangers will go slow at those spots, waiting for the entire market to be determined. Arbitration-eligible players who are not tendered contracts by Dec. 12 become free agents. Seattle's Ben Broussard could be among that group.

id wouldnt mind having a guy like kevin millar, solid OBP guy who can walk alot and good defensive player

id like coco crisp over any CF mainly b/c he's so damn good defensively and before he came to boston he was good and maybe he can reclaim that magic. plus he's alot cheaper than hunter or rowand

Bleh. I don't want Coco Crisp because he's more bang for the buck.

If I get more bang with a Hunter or a Rowand and have to spend a bit more buck, then do it

its that kind of talk that gets the rangers into bad contracts, hunter and rowand will cost 2 and maybe even 3 times as much as crisp and with crisp you're getting a guy who's the best defensive CF in baseball.

they're all great defensively but hunter is on the backside of his career and rowand has had injury problems and he probably just had a contract year.

id take crisp who could be a top of the lineup hitter (he was getting it done in cleveland) and is just now entering the prime of his career. he was overly criticized as a red sox and maybe he just "couldnt handle it" renteria was ran out of town and had his best year

Texas Rangers may find CF hard to bag

When talking to other GM's
"Guys were very frank," Daniels said. "There is some willingness from clubs to be creative when it comes to a deal. I think we got a sense of what is realistic in terms of trade possibilities."

The free-agent market will become more active next week when clubs can start talking about money. The Rangers have significant interest in Torii Hunter but are concerned about where the market might drive the length and financial terms of a deal for him.

They would have interest in Andruw Jones on a short-term, shared-risk deal. Aaron Rowand and Mike Cameron appear to be fall-back options among the free agents.

I want me some Coco puffs! 50 walks with 28 SB would be nice at the top of the lineup.

Andruw could come for a shorter contract, according to norm. Does that interest anyone?

id do it over someone like torii hunter, boras could do a contract like JD Drew where its like a 5 year deal but if he rebounds from his poor year this year he can opt out after the 2nd year

God yes. Having Andruw Jones in our lineup would make it very strong.

I dont know about everyone else, but I like Byrd. He did a very good job. I do not know if he can keep it up, but he is an OK fall back. The strategy of the John Hart era was to find fast infielders and try to make them outfielders. That is not a good strategy given the intricacies of the position. I think they will try to get a lower priced guy, and have byrd as the back up just in case.
