Red Sox And Yankees Both Talking Santana Trade
28th November, 2007 - 12:45 pm
SI.com - The Twins have opened trade discussions for Johan Santana by asking the Yankees for a package of at least three young players that would include one of their three top starters -- Joba Chamberlain, Phil Hughes or Ian Kennedy -- plus center fielder Melky Cabrera.
The Twins are talking with several teams and are asking for a large return for their two-time Cy Young winner. From Boston, they asked about one of two top young pitchers -- Clay Buchholz or Jon Lester -- plus center field prodigy Jacoby Ellsbury, league sources told SI.com.
The Mets, Dodgers, Angels and Mariners are seen as other potential big players for Santana, who went 15-13 this season with a 3.33 ERA. The Twins began canvassing prospective suitors after their extension offer of $80 million over four years fell well short of Santana's expectations. The 28-year-old ace with the 93-44 career record is slated to make $13.25 million in 2008 and is eligible for free agency after the season. [READ]

They never get into the game when these rare opportunities come up. The rarest commodity in baseball is the #1 starter, and here is a young one. No where do I see Rangers in the mix. Instead, they piss away money on Padilla and his ilk

the yankees also have better players to give up.
joba and phillip hughes are 2 of the top 5 pitching prospects in the game and both have the potential and under the right guidance and staying healthy will be #1.
they're also major league ready something the twins want along with another everday major league position player to go along with 2 top prospects. most of our top prospects are in A or just moving up to AA
plus why mortgage our future on something thats a free agent after the year, the only way id trade for him is if he agreed to an extension and his agent will be moronic to let that happen. we wouldnt win next year w/him so it's all a moot point.
Here's what the yanks will probably have to give up or close to it:
Joba chamberlain or phil hughes, melky cabrera, another young player with great potential and if boston ups the ante they might throw in Ian Kennedy
what could the rangers do to match that? our best Pitching prospect close to major league ready is Eric Hurley and he shouldnt even be considered for the rotation til at least after the AS break. the best we could do is something like Ian Kinsler, Eric Hurley, Taylor Teagarden, Elvis Andrus and Neftali Feliz. thats a crapload to give up an a big risk and we still wont be guaranteed to win anything b/c we still have to many holes.
building a team takes time and we're trying to build the right way, from within w/the farm system. we could get santanna this year and it wouldnt make a difference b/c the angels are going to win it this year running away.
the key is to look for improvements as the year progresses w/our young players and pitchers and pay attention to the farm team b/c JD has this going into the right direction. Last year we were ranked nationally as having the 28th best farm system, pretty crappy, now after the draft the Rangers had and the great trades Daniels made we're almost certainly a shoe in for top 10 farm system and Keith Law even went as far to say the 2nd best.
if it makes you feel better next offseason when he's a f/a im sure the rangers name will be in the mix, hicks hasnt spent alot of money lately (rightfully so there's alot of crap out there) but milwood and padilla could be off the books in '09 so we'll probably make a serious run next year but right now its not worth it.
