Jays Re-sign Mat Stairs for 2 years
You know, I like Matt Stairs. Good ole Canadian boy and he had a good year. But I think these are the guys you sign after making the real moves of the offseason. Nothing worse than a GM who outbids himself. The Leafs and the Jays both do this. They pay more for a guy than any other team would.

Yeah, risktaker91 has the right amount. It's not that the dollars are high. It's just that Stairs is 39, and will be 40 when the season starts. Remember when we had that one great year from Greg Myers? Same thing. The key is to enjoy it for one year, but then move on. Don;t make the guy a roster player for the next two years.
Btw, how long until Stairs gets caught for performance enhancing drugs? Anytime a guy gets better with age, I have questons.

Seriously? Why give a guy like Stairs a two-year deal when no one else would?
Stairs is the type that you sign to a one-year deal and hope to flip to a contender if your team isn't in the hunt; signing him to a two-year deal totally defeats that potential purpose. And what're the serious chances of Stairs repeating this year's performance two more times?

People need to know that the two-year deal looks like this.
2008 - 2.25 mil
2009 - 1 mil
Essentially we are just banking on one more good year from Matt Stairs. I'm thinking the 2nd year was tacked on just out of respect for an old dude who produced when took a chance on him.
This deal ain't half as stupid as the McDonald contract that was given to him a month before the season even finishes. So that's how i'm looking at it because i don't have enough energy to roll my eyes again at J.P.

Hmm, to add to the confusion, the hockey pucks on the Fan Monday morning were saying that the plan is to go back to a platoon with Reed Johnson. Because of his terrible year, the plan is to alternate between Reed and Matt Stairs. I guess now I understand the move. I like Reed, but he had his chance this year and failed. Sure it may have been injury, but in that case, make him earn it again.
Of course, the better plan would have been to go after a better single player than the platoon of Reed and Stairs.
