I'd come back with Rodriguez in the 9th, since he will likely be set aside to start Friday.
Give Hoffman a break and have him ready to go the next 2 games if needed.
A risk sure.

I continue to hate Schneider's bullpen management. He just absolutely burns through relievers (leaving them unavailable on other days) because he's unwilling to trust even his long relievers for more than one inning.

Terrible.

Well we win. A split considering the **** opening day is pretty good. Also Guerrero, santander, haven’t really done much yet.

Chris Bassitt should have been our opening day starter. What a pitching performance.

Yea honestly not too bad. Could've easily been 3 out of 4 if Scherzer's thumb lasted another couple innings and two relievers who have no business being on the team gave up the game yesterday.

160-2
9. Similarly, IF THOU HAST SPENT the entire offseason predicting that thy team will stink, thou shalt not gloat, nor even be happy, shouldst thou turn out to be correct. Realistic analysis is fine, but be a fan first, a smug smarty-pants second.

Honestly considering how bad Berrios was and Max getting injured (predictably) a split against the O's is solid. I still dont like Gimenez batting 4th and our bullpen kinda sucks so we'll see how it goes.

The true modern day Bradley Zimmer. Except Zimmer was getting paid over $500,000 per year. Straw will be taking home over 15 million guaranteed over the next two years (including a 1.75 million buyout for the 2027 season). Cleveland paying only two million of his remaining salary.

Cleveland front office probably laughing how foolish the Jays were to take that contract off their hands, in their desperate manner to sign Sasaki (who all along was going to sign with the Dodgers). Over 20 million overall spent by this organization for 2025 on a part-time injury prone Starter like Scherzer and a bench warmer like Straw, could have easily been spent more wisely to shore up the bullpen or other areas on this team.

Credit to the FO for ending the Lovelady experiment. Cost them one game too many but could have cost more. Didn't end Barnes yet though who has worse stats overall.

A month ago, if somebody had said that Gimenez and Heineman would be our top two HR guys at *any* point of the season, they'd have been laughed off the board.

I don't think Scherzer was their first choice by any means. But the starting pitching market kinda fell off after Burnes and Fried. They did try really hard to go after Burnes and apparently offered him the most money, but he chose to go home. Scherzer was kind of a hail mary play and I'm sure they didn't expect a lot of innings from him or for him to go the full season. That's why the price was relatively cheap. The intent is to ride him as long as possible and hope someone moves through the upper minors fast like Bloss or Yesavage. Or maybe Manoah has a really fast recovery and can even pitch this season in the majors (although I feel that's unlikely).

I will say that Straw was a stupid mistake. I don't think Sasaki was going to sign with the Dodgers all along. He wouldn't have come here in person otherwise and taken so much time to make his decision. I think he definitely considered us (and we employ some people who are really close to him). But the Dodgers were his preferred pick and whatever we pitched didn't sway him. Getting desperate last minute and swinging that Straw deal was dumb. Especially since thats a trade that could've been done too after Sasaki's decision if he did chose us and we wanted to offer a bigger contract. Cleveland was desperate to unload Straw. That Straw money should've 100% been used on the bullpen.

I do not call paying a part-time broken down starter like Scherzer (who is also turning 41 soon) 15.5 million a year "relatively cheap". There was a reason other teams walked away at that amount when the Jays came in with that offer. The Straw transaction was a joke. With the Approximately 20 million paid to these guys- you could have easily gotten 2-3 more quality relievers in the bullpen.

Heck, the same amount could have landed a Starter like Kikuchi (since he signed for around 21 million a year over three years) with Anaheim. It points to a larger picture how this organization has not spent wisely and should be nowhere near a top 5 Luxury Tax payroll team, based on their current overall talent and depth coming into this year. Credit to Rogers ownership for allowing the payroll to be where it is at, even if Shapiro and Atkins have done a terrible job with the money they have been given.

The most money doesn’t always equal landing a player in FA. Or did you all sleep through this off season?

Also, Yariel looking like a legit leverage arm is not a bad thing. They need those as much ( if not more than) a long man in the bullpen who pitches when you are behind most of the time. They need to be able to hang on to the leads they do get. And right now they dont have a lot they can count on to bridge between the starters and Garcia and Hoffman. If he can make himself a legit option for 7th and 8th inning holds, that will help them win more games than being stretched out to mop up when a starter leaves early.
