Jays Lock Up 5 Players

Post#1 » by joeyt618 » Fri Jan 18, 2008 9:20 am

Jason Frasor $1.125 million - 1 year
Gustavo Chasin $725,000 - 1 year
Brian Tallet $640,000 - 1 year
Marco Scutaro $2.65 million - 2 years
Scott Downs $10 million - 3 years

bluejays.com wrote:The lone player left unsigned is right fielder Alex Rios, but the Blue Jays have been discussing a multiyear extension with the budding star. On Tuesday, Jays general manager J.P. Ricciardi said that the talks with Rios' representatives were ongoing, but the sides weren't necessarily close to reaching an agreement.

"They're going," said Ricciardi, assessing the negotiations. "I wouldn't say they're going great, but I wouldn't say they're going bad. They're going. It's still at that stage where you're talking. We'll see how it works out."

Why did we re-sign Frasor again?

I'm surprised Downs was signed to a 3-year deal. He would have been a free agent after 2008 and he is Type A ranked, which means it may have lead to a 1st round pick if he was signed by another club. Then again, he's lefty, put up great numbers the past two years (as a reliever), and has a movable contract (unless he implodes) so he's still an asset. I guess with the uncertainty around Ryan and League, Ricciardi wants to make sure he has enough insurance.

Frasor, Tallet, and Chacin are depth signings. There's no point in non-tendering them given how cheap they are, and they have little or no trade value.

The Rios thing is interesting. He has three more years before he's a free agent, so a 4 or 5 year deal would bypass his first and/or second free agent years. That's going to take A LOT of money for Rios to agree to. I'd imagine Ricciardi could lock Rios up for three years, which would take care of his arbitration years, but anything past that would be surprising.

Decent signings all around. Little surprised by the length/size of Downs' deal, but its not life threatening and definitely moveable if need be.

Well, we got them all back for cheap only problem if there a bargain they going to want more for 5 years and after that contract is over and sign the new deals they will blow again.

HOpefully it pans out.

For some reason, I really like the Downs signing. I think he has potential to be pretty good.

Nice work by JP.

Why the hell hasn't Rios been signed yet? He played the best on our team last season.

Because Rios' people wants a salary of $5.65 million, while our offer to him was $4.535 million. Discrepancy = unsigned Rios.
