Doc hopes teammates see the little picture, too

"I think it's so important for us as a team that we do all those little things," said Halladay, who will extend his Blue Jays record when he makes his sixth consecutive opening-day start at Yankee Stadium.

"I think there were times last year where that might have escaped us," Halladay said. "There's not one person, it's a group effort. That was my biggest concern. We're going in and playing teams that we feel like we should beat and we kind of carry that attitude and expect them to kind of hand it to us.

Stairs out for Jays as rain threatens opener

Stairs has been in a race for fitness since his left hip began hurting ten days ago. The hip flexor problem proved too painful to allow him to run freely in the field or on the base paths. Platoon partner Shannon Stewart will take Stairs' place in left field and second spot in the batting order.

At the dawn of what promises to be a critical year for the Jays, and less than 24 hours from his opening-day start here against the New York Yankees, Halladay elaborated on some comments he made earlier in the spring regarding the Jays' sometimes inconsistent approach in the past.

I think the Jays small window of opportunity to make the post-season is open right now and won't be there next year.

The Sox pitching staff has already been hit with major injuries and they didn't bring in anybody significant that will have that 'I haven't been there before' attitude to raise the clubhouse. They could easily fall back into the 88-92 win range.

And the Yanks are on the 2 spectrums with a bunch of either aging or inexperienced pitchers and enough guys coming off of career seasons that their lineup won't likely be as strong.

But the Jays need to stay relatively healthy (already an issue) and they need to be willing to make a big move at the deadline to fill whatever holes surface. And of course even if one of these 2 teams falters, there's still the 2 juggernauts in the AL Central we need to catch for the WC.
