Actually, the league was once played on a 154-game schedule. So if anything, there have been more games in this era which allowed more records to be broken.

So if the schedule were to revert back to 154-games, "history" isn't exactly changed, and this can allow the extra week (or 1.5 weeks) for the "extra" first round.
