Article: Zaun not against trade away from Jays

Post#1 » by Luv 4 da game » Wed Jul 30, 2008 2:08 am

Upset over his diminished role behind the plate with Toronto, Zaun told MLB.com on Tuesday that he would welcome a trade that could net some more playing time -- possibly with a contending club. The Jays have talked to numerous clubs about Zaun, but there has been little to no interest.

"Trades are a part of baseball," Zaun said. "Things haven't worked out the way I planned them to this year here in Toronto. Getting an opportunity to play on a regular basis for a pennant contender or going back to a place that I'm familiar with, it would probably be a good thing."

Your 37, can't throw out a runner, or hit Zaun. What do you expect??

I hate when players come out during a season, and tell the media that their not happy in their current situation. Suck it up, be a professional that you are, and the millions that you are getting paid and finish the season!! Don't be a distraction to the team. Walk away at the end of the season.

this kind of surprises me... zaun was somewhat of a vocal leader in the locker room, as he displayed that during the shea hillenbrand fiasco..

but yeah, zaun is definitely on the decline, no sense in pouting now

haha, I love how zaun wants to be traded to a contender and to a spot where he can log the majority of innings. News flash Zaun, any contender has a competent catcher behind the plate, and if they didn't, they don't want your garbage ass playing there.

I love JP's comment about how they would do a trade with Zaun but there simply trying to find somebody that wants him, that's the impasse there at according to JP. Hey JP, I'd reccommend a high school team somewhere, Zaun just might be able to throw out some fat smoker lumbering to second base, and he could possibily beat out some 12 year old noodle armed girl playing catcher there. That'd be about the only spot where he could play for a contender and be a starter...

 spyke

Zaun always looks like he's sulking, even when the team is winning. I guess he will look a little extra sour these days.

I see his point. He's getting older and Barajas is outplaying him, which wasn't expected. All things said, Zaun has his strengths that would be viable to a contender, especially one without a vet catcher, like Anaheim. He's great with pitchers, he takes a ton of pitches, and is far from an automatic out at the plate. Sure, he can't throw out runners, but he's definitely useful. Barajas is playing out of his mind this year.

It's worth noting that Barajas has cooled off considerably, to the point where Zaun is out-performing him offensively. That's hardly a shocker; Barajas has never been known for his bat, and his OBP is particularly brutal...he's the only regular on the team under .300. I mentioned a couple weeks ago that the team probably should have looked to deal him before he came back down to earth; now that he has, it's a safe bet that neither catcher will return much more than cash and maybe an aging AAAA player. Still worth doing, though.

didn't barajas only sign a 1-year deal? Zaun is a FA also at the end of the season IIRC.. so we'll be left with no catchers? Hopefully Rod re-signs

I wouldn't be against a trade away from the Jays as well. Zaun's garbage.
