Does MLB need to address this

Post#1 » by jalenrose#5 » Sun Dec 14, 2008 9:34 pm

My question is, with the recent signings of Sabathia and Burnett with the Yankees to multi million dollar deals, and with talk they are still looking for pitchers like Sheets/Lowe/Pettitte and still being in the market for Teixeira and Ramirez, I really feel with the economy the way it is, that it just is not fair to the other teams in this league.

The Yankees, granted they had like 60 million come off the books, just spent over half of their money on two pitchers (23 for CC and 16.5 for AJ), and now can still have more room to add allstar talent.

I just feel with the economy the way it is, it will cause alot of teams to suffer in the long run, and with the Yankees this much over the cap, it just makes for an uneven playing field.

I had a solution a while back, that for each dollar they are over the cap, then they pay double in luxury tax. But the best part, all the money collected goes to teams in their league. So say the cap is at 110 million...the Yanks are probably going to get to 200...so they are 90 over....they pay 180 million and it gets distributed even thoughout the AL, or to the other teams that are under the cap. That money is for them to spend or keep.

I just think this sucks for even middle of the road markets such as Toronto, St. Louis, Philly, Detroit etc. Any Solutions you can think of

Salary Cap! It looks like the Jays will not make the post season for a very very long time.

yes MLB needs to address this. It's so unbeleiveably ridiculous. I mean I was laughing at the yankees missing the playoffs, but now... I see what the fallout is from that. They can take virtually an endless bank account and buy up the absolute best talents on the market for whatever position they deem to not be acceptable. There isn't a team in baseball that can compete with that.

The answear in my mind is too put all these free spenders into 1 division. I know in reality it would never happen. But the Angels, the dodgers, the bo-sox, the yankees and either of the cubs, the mets and the tigers. I know the argument against it is that you can't have west coast and east coast teams in the same division, but realistically, these guys take huge jets that are so roomy and comfortable with gourmet buffett meals staying in 5 star accomodations, and they'd only have to go what 2 or 3 times a year? Big deal. Even if they want a nugget, take the west coast trip near the years end. I'm sure the yanks would love a week or two down south in late September... But division re-alignment seems like the only answear to me, but that's only because a hard salary cap will never fly for whatever reason...

I used to think along these lines, but it seems it's not necessary. Fans enjoy having the "name" teams being good and being in the news.

The key for the small market teams is to play it smart. Either be bad...really bad.....or go for it. No in between. Problem in TO is we're stuck in the middle. JP tried for a bit to win with a $100M payroll. Problem is, once you get a couple of injuries, you have no more money to keep competing.

Jays needs to realize they're not winning while Vernon and Rios are here. Trade them for some young prospects and start over. You need a perfect storm of a bunch of young guys getting good at the same time.

Yes, they should probably also trade Doc, but I can't suggest it. He's up there with Robbie as my favourite Jays of all time, so I can't suggest they trade him.
