OT- Gonzalez Says Trading Him Would Be Best For Padres

Post#1 » by zilby » Wed Jul 22, 2009 4:24 pm

Adrian Gonzalez can certainly understand why it might be in the best interest of the Padres to trade him.

“To a certain extent, I don't disagree with people who say the best thing for the Padres is to go out and get a bunch of people for me,” said Gonzalez. “If you're looking at it from an ownership standpoint, I think there's a lot to it, just because of where the team is and everything.

“Would I want to be traded? No. Is it to a team that has a chance to win the World Series? I'd have to be intrigued by it. Know what I mean?”

lol that's like trading kobe for marcus banks jason kapono and joey graham

25 homers in Petco is nojoke, would be 30 plus if he played at Rogers Centre. I'd think to get Gonzalez you'd probably have to give up some good pitching prospects like Rzepczynski or Romero.

If JP offered that deal in person instead of over the phone, he'd get punched in the face.

It's nice to dream, but the fact is that the Jays are in a selling mode, not buying.

It's a moot point. The team is selling.

Trading for Gonzalez would start with Snider and work downwards. He is a star calibre player in his prime with two EXTREMELY affordable years left on his contract. I doubt the Padres trade him, unless they are really in selling mode.

Your other trade proposal wasn't that great either. Millar has zero value while Overbay is overpaid (especially for San Diego), so it's basically Rzepczynski, Arencibia, plus dead weight for Gonzalez. It's not a bad foundation, but you'd probably have to take out Overbay and Millar and throw in a guy like Brad Mills. It's not the greatest offer the Padres would receive, but it's the best Toronto could do without bankrupting their system.

Now if you were serious about a trade, Cooper, Arencibia, and one of Mills, Rzepczynski, or Purcey will get it done. But I'd be more content letting Cooper develop than paying Gonzalez $10 million in a few years.

Meh. Cooper was important in the proposal, and is probably only one of three young guys Toronto can anchor a trade around for a top player (Snider and R. Romero the obvious other two). Arencibia and Mills are good complementary players, while Purcey has enough "unknown" mystique about him. It's not enough, though, and I don't think tacking on more B-level prospects will do it.

Let's just say if Toronto traded away Gonzalez (who I've wanted JP to get since Texas basically gave him away) for a package of Arencibia/Purcey/Mills, I'd be pissed.

Purcey, Wells, Arencibia and Overbay. that is going to kill their salary forever, but they get 2 good prospects, a good CF (thats what we will tell them ;) ) and a good fill-in at first base to kill the void.

San Diego's GM isn't JP Ricciardi. This is a team looking to unload their high priced players for prospects. You saw it in the attempted trade of Jake Peavy, and now possibly with Adrian Gonzalez. The Padres have zero interest in Overbay & Wells.

If the Jays were contenders, then any package would have to start with Travis Snider & Ricky Romero as someone mentioned. But as someone said, it's a moot point.
