Just saw this. It's interesting, as this was basically the package they were offering for Halladay. Does this deal then boost Halladay's trade value, as he's obviously a better pitcher?

It's not as good of a package as they offered for Halladay at all. The Phillies apparently offered the Jays Happ, Taylor, Carrasco, and Donald. Taylor is a top 25 prospect right now and Happ, although overrated is a major league pitcher whose doing well and has more value than Knapp.

Wow they didn't give up ANY of the guys we asked for. No wonder they turned us down.

I think this is bad news for us. Halladay is clearly better than Lee but the difference is not as big as what we've been asking for and what Lee got, not even close. I think we might have to take that Bucholtz deal

Philly was never going to offer Toronto what they wanted. They're not desperate enough. So they found the Indians, who were willing to take a pretty terrible deal probably just to cut payroll. It wasn't a good trade, and it won't benefit Cleveland for a couple of years (if ever, depending if Knapp works out). Quite frankly, I don't see how you trade a Cy Young pitcher without getting back one of the other team's top three prospects.

It's not bad news for Toronto, though. That's like saying if Boston traded Pedroia for fifty cents on the dollar, it would lower Pujols' trade value. We're talking a vast talent difference. The only thing they have in common is a Cy Young that Halladay would've won if he played in the Central.

ROFL Cleveland fails. they didnt even get one of the phillies top 3 prospects for a reigning Cy Young winner. so i guess this means they are done the pursuit of halladay?

The sad thing is that Philly still has everything we wanted in a trade for Halladay so they could still land him if they really wanted to...which should tell you something about what Cleveland just settled for.

JP doesn't have to take any deal if he doesn't get what he's looking for (and what he's looking for seems to be a lot). I think the team is perfectly content with keeping him and trying to win next year.

IMHO, this strategy only makes sense if Rogers is going to bump the payroll back up a bit in order to allow them to go out and get a bat. They need more offense.

And no, I don't think the unknown variable of Snider is likely to be enough.

They are only 3 games behind Boston in the adjusted standings this year despite the injuries and the fact that Millar actually gets ABs. It isn't a bad team. Just an unlucky one.

Snider projects to be a good player in the majors next year, but yeah, I guess you'd be relying on him to hit for you next year if you were to truly contend.

I was listening to Keith Law on ESPN Radio today and he said he didn't like the trade from the Indians point of view. Apparently all of the prospects they received have some sort of flag for either character issues or work effort. He went on to say that JP made the right move by holding on to Halladay and that demand could still increase in the off-season because more teams will be interested when it's a fresh season.

Basically, the Indians took all of Philadelphia's disappointing prospects off of their hands plus Knapp, which is either a great package or an awful one. I don't think that highly of Lee, though, so I don't think it's a bad deal on their part...Carrasco has hit the skids this year but at 22 and in AAA has plenty of life in him, Donald was Sickles' #4 prospect in the Phillies organization before flunking the season, Marson has a nice bat if no power (which might be his downfall, but catchers can make do), and Knapp throws the bejeezus out of the ball.

Without their 2009 numbers taken into account, this was be a barn-burner by Cleveland; of course, you can't simply toss out a season of bad play, but if Lee turns back into a pumpkin (I'm still waiting for it) and one/two of the three pan out, it could be a very nice deal. Or they could end up with zip.
