Do you get the two draft picks for a FA leaving after a 1 year deal? If you do, I suspect that's part of the motivation for Oakland. That or shipping Sheets to a contender at the deadline for more prospects

Yes, but in his case the latter is far more likely; because he missed all of last season, Type-A status (which is based on two-year running totals) is basically impossible.

That's a lot of money for Ben Sheets.

I can see both sides on this.

That's a lot of money per season but because it's only a 1 year contract, I think it's a pretty low risk, high reward move by the A's. Sheets has been a very good pitcher when healthy. And if he had been healthy the going rate for a pitcher like him would probably be closer to $12 million a season for 3-4 years.

And as I've been arguing about Damon, Delgado and others, if you sign one of these guys to a 1 year contract, assuming they stay healthy they immediately become very easy to move to a contender for prospects during the season.
