Adam Lind signs four year deal

I think a big part of this deal is the fact that he is a DH. His agent probably realized that by the time Lind would have been eligible for free agency (after the 2013 season) he would have been 30 and probably would have had a stigma of being a DH around him. I mean he could play LF or 1B if need be, but if the Jays are apprehensive to do it now I doubt they'll do it in the future as Lind ages and becomes worse defensively. This way Lind gets guaranteed money through his arby years, and potentially gets more if he produces past that time. The contract is still cheap enough that even if Lind regresses to an .830-.850 OPS, it would still be good value. I don't know how many more .932 OPS seasons Lind has in his bat. It will be interesting to see how his career turns out. Luckily the Jays will get his prime years at good value.

It just feels nice to see these types of deals without a no-trade or opt-out clause involved. With Beeston emphasizing shorter term guaranteed deals, I think these types of deals where the team has the power will be the norm for the Jays. It will also mean they will have to develop talent at a high rate because free agents (the good ones) are going to want more than four guaranteed years.
