What an incredible moment just now, with Jim Joyce coming out to get lineup cards and getting at least some cheers -- and the (more)

lineup card from Armando Galarraga. Don't know if you saw it, but a lot of emotion in Joyce's face; nice gesture by Leyland and the Tigers.

I don't think it should be overturned. A "one-time exception" sets in forth a slippery slope for the future. Let's just all agree that it was an off the books perfect game and move on. The good thing that comes out of this is that I'm almost 100% sure there will be some kind of limited challenge system next year.

So let them investigate the challenge system in the future and make the "one-time" exception now. This move literally hurts no one.

Umpire Jim Joyce wiped away tears as he took the field at Comerica Park on Thursday afternoon in Detroit, a day after his blown call.

Joyce and Galarraga met at home plate as the pitcher presented the umpire with the Tigers' lineup card for the game against the Cleveland Indians. Joyce shook hands with Galarraga and patted him on the shoulder.

There were some cheers when Joyce appeared, but a smattering of boos when he was introduced.

Nice move by the organization.

Fay Vincent was on the Fan 590 and he said he wouldn't even have taken as long as Bud to conclude that no change should be made. In his eyes, baseball has errors. Just like a 3rd baseman might make an error, so do umpires. If baseball wants to make up rules for replays, then sure. But for now, it's part of the game.

That catch was snow-coned it looked like it was fumbled a bit. I can see why joyce called him safe. It wasn't as clear cut as many claim.

With a day to reflect, I think this works out well for Galarraga. Perfect games are rare, but ask 100 fans to name the perfect games of 2010 in 2-3 years and I'll bet more will remember his than the others. If you haven't looked them up recently, who here can recite the last 4-5 pre-2010 perfect games? Sure it's not in the record books, but he's getting the accomplishment immortalized far better this way, at least in the short to mid-term. That's a pretty decent consolation prize IMO.

Now, I'm not sure this is a big enough event that it'll register with fans 20 years from now, but IMO it's got a better chance with the controversy than without.

You can't reverse an outcome, make an exception and create a precedent like this as a commisssioner.

Should he also reverse the Mariners' win last night because they won on a botched call on the final play?

...I am surprised by how much this thread is anit-Joyce and not pro-Galarraga. The guy is a total class act. Didn't loss his cool, didn't mouth off Joyce (and he had ample chances, especially when they spoke after the game) and even went out and shook hands and exchanged line-up-cards before the game which to me is unheard of in professional sporting. These sort of actions send nothing short of the right message.

So many kids want to grow up and be like all the pros out there who are scumbags and have no respect. We need more people like Galarraga out there to set an example for others.

To expose any bias' - I am an umpire and have been for 10+ years in all sorts of competitive ball. Bad calls happen and are part of the sport. The fact it happened on out #27 of a perfect game attempt just amplified the issue. Rest assured there will be more mistakes made (just wait for the World Cup!).

I teach annual umpire clinics to young umps and part of my presentation is that 'Even Umpires Make Mistakes'. Joyce will certainly be used as an example going forward. Kudos to Joyce for coming out and working the plate yesterday and being man enough to admit he made a mistake.

Galarraga took losing the perfect game pretty well, which is very impressive. Props to him.

On the bright side, as satyr pointed out, I think people will remember the botched call and the game he pitched for a pretty damn long time. This is the only perfect game in the history of the MLB to be taken away due to an umpire's error. It's much like how most fans remember Denkinger and the 1985 series for that blown call.

But of course I'm sure he'd rather have the perfect game written in the books.

So how could umpire Jim Joyce blow that call?

"I've thought about it maybe a thousand and two times, and I wish I knew," Joyce said. "I wish I knew what happened."

A pretty shaky Joyce appeared with WRIF's Drew and Mike on Thursday morning -- and he was most shaky when he talked about the death threats he and his family had received after Wednesday night's incident.

"If it was directed to me, individually, just me, I could take it," Joyce said. "But it's my family, to the point that I've had to have security."

• Official scorer Chuck Klonke, who had the option of changing the infield hit to an error -- making it a no-hitter -- if Galarraga bobbled the throw: "I saw that replay, and I don't think I would call it an error because it didn't appear to me that Galarraga ever lost control of the ball."

• Former umpire Don Denkinger, known for blowing a similar call in the 1985 World Series, on what Joyce can expect: "I probably made thousands of plays. That's the only one they'll remember. That's pretty sad."
