Post#1 » by Pop Rozay » Mon Aug 16, 2010 11:54 pm

1st overall pick in 2002, and 30 years old finally gets his first win, against the yanks 1-0.
hopefully he gets back on track, gives us hope about morrow also a 1st overall pick who has struggled earlier in their career.

Heh, there's not much hope for Bullington...he's not very good. Fastball is showing some zip, but if he's to have much of a role in his twilight years it'll likely be as a swingman, or perhaps a seventh-inning guy.

Still, I almost posted this yesterday because it is pretty remarkable; he was a massive overdraft in 2002 -- not hindsight; the pick was bashed from day one -- who has had to wear that around his neck every since, has struggled with injuries and sucking (mostly sucking) over nearly 900 pro IP, and finally gets his first big-league win at 29 by throwing eight nearly-flawless innings against the Yankees.

I blame the pirates probably put too much pressure on him being the first overall pick

Nah, he was considered a guy with a #3 starter ceiling out of college...they took him first overall simply because he was cheap (given that he had no business being drafted that high).

I always like hearing about these types of stories. The Josh Hamilton reclamation project was an absolutely amazing story. I don't think Bullington is in line for the same type of story, but I'd love to see him stick around until he's 35 or so. Have him start a couple of seasons and then move him to the bullpen. I think that if he could stick around for a few years and have a winning percentage in the .400 range and an ERA under 5, he'd be in good shape. He'd have just enough stats so that he wouldn't always be in the discussion for biggest draft busts (a significant list).
