I think there is more to this move than just "I love Detroit", which is certainly a true statement. I think Damon sees a friendly clubhouse in the city he loves in Detroit, and looks to Boston as a hostile city and locker-room with expectations that he just couldn't possibly meet. The only way that he "mends" things by going to Boston is if he is the Manny-eque (in Los Angeles) catalyst that propels them into the hottest team in baseball and they win the pennant. Without a big addition (like Damon would have been), the Red Sox have only a marginally better chance at the playoffs than do the Tigers - both are highly unlikely, though the Red Sox (despite the beatings, setbacks, and season-ending injuries) just won't die.
The rift between he and Red Sox nation is very deep, and although there was some friendly statements and feelers made between the two (when the rumor he was claimed by Boston), I am pretty sure after what he did in New York made it impossible for him to really ever suit up with Boston again. The "Sox Nation" probably would never really have embraced him again (the initial reaction was interesting - they desperately need a boost now, but the fact that it almost came in the form of Benedict Arnold had some saying they would rather just miss the playoffs). Even the clubhouse seemed very guarded about the possible addition, with Ortiz (among others) wanting more definite confirmation before even making a friendly comment.
