Only a second or third round pick for Downs?

Post#1 » by dagger » Fri Nov 12, 2010 5:53 pm

Type A or not, the vagueries of free agency could leave the Jays with only a second or third round pick as comp.

Buster_ESPN
Scott Downs almost certainly won't be impacted by Type A status because teams most likely to sign him are contenders who already (more)

Buster_ESPN
will be signing some other free agent, or maybe, like the Phillies, will be getting a draft pick back for another player. This would (more)

Buster_ESPN
be bad news for the Jays, who might only get a second- or third-round pick for him.

Not a big fan of that, but I guess that is the breaks. I remember this happened two years ago with Burnett. Legit player, but since the Yankees signed C.C. we didn't get their first pick. I was hoping the worst case scenario was a sandwich pick, but I guess not.

don't type A free agent net you a compensation pick (sandwich pick) automatically? from what I know it's a compensation pick + whatever the team's top pick is.

Nothing new. It happened with Burnett and Scutaro too. Just another backwards aspect of the CBA. It actually rewards big-spending teams.

That's correct. Downs will probably get us, at worst, a pick around 35 and a 2nd/3rd rounder.

Riveting journalism Buster! He's also being a bit misleading, no matter how many FA's a team that gets Downs signs, the Jays are guaranteed a comp round pick.

OK that makes sense now. I was thinking we had to be getting a sandwich, I just got a bit confused for a second.

So worst case scenario is sandwich + a late pick depending on how many players the team that signs Downs sign aside from him who are rated above him?

As a point of comparison, when Burnett signed with the Yankees the Jays got NYY's 3rd round pick, but got the 37th pick overall in the sandwich round in addition to that. That was the worst case scenario with the Yankees signing two Type-A free agents ranked higher than AJ (Sabathia and Tex). So with Downs the Jays are guaranteed a pick around 35 or so, but where that additional pick falls (1st, 2nd, or 3rd round) remains to be seen.

I fully expect Downs in New York next season.

Makes sense. What is the deciding factor for what slot a team picks at in the sandwich round.? i.e assuming there were 20 hypothetical sandwich picks, what factor comes into play to determine where the Jays would pick between the 1st and 20th sandwich pick on account of losing Downs.

So stockpiling picks in this way is a strategy - where has this worked out before?
