Re: Report: Red Sox expected to sign Scott Downs
Looking like we will get LA's 3rd rounder for Downs, With the Halo's missing out on Crawford they might start to get desperate for offense, especially if they somehow don't sign Beltre. Their farm system is loaded with very high ceiling prospects and I would be interested to see what they would be willing to part with for ether JBau or Hill. Assuming Trout is un touchable Jean Segura looks very good and Mark Trumbo looks decent.

Re: Downs signs with Angels; 3 years, $15m
I don't understand how the difference between Downs and Gregg is basically an extra year. That's crazy.
To me the pick you're getting is the supplemental one. When you lose one of the top 3-5 targets in an entire offseason you've got a shot at a first to go with it, but for guys after that they're getting signed by clubs whose first is already protected or they're going to sign one of the top 3-5 guys as well. Now, if they are protected and they signer a higher type A, then dropping from 2nd to 3rd with a huge sandwich round is the worst case scenario, but at that point it's really about money available. If you want to spend, you can still get high-end talent.

Any idea's why the Angels 1st round pick would be protected?

The first round picks of the teams with the fifteen worst records are always protected; the Angels happened to get the final spot. One more win and they would have had to surrender their pick if they signed a Type A.

**** your asterisk.

Oh right, I forgot how much they struggled this season. Thanks for the clarification!

Scott Downs signs with Angels
ANAHEIM, CALIF.—The Los Angeles Angels and former Blue Jays reliever Scott Downs have agreed to a three-year deal worth $15 million U.S.
Downs, one of the top middle relievers on the free-agent market, went 5-5 with a 2.64 ERA in 67 games for the Jays last season. The 34-year-old left-hander is 27-28 with 16 saves in 379 games over nine major league seasons. Angels general manager Tony Reagins says Downs “adds tremendous depth to our bullpen.”
The Angels also added Hisanori Takahashi to their bullpen this month, agreeing to an $8 million, two-year deal with the Japanese lefty.

BTW, the Blue Jays now have two confirmed draft picks as compensation, the Blue Jays are gonna be picking 35th overall in the 2011 MLB draft as compensation for Scott Downs and 39th overall as compensation for John Buck. The exact picks that we'll recieve as compensation for Olivo and Gregg is yet to be determined.

Are you sure about 39? If Beltre and/or Soriano sign for compensation, I was under the impression that those picks would push us down a couple slots further.

nevermind you're right, for some reason i was under the impression that Buck was type A, a complete brain fart. #35 is the only pick confirmed, the second pick is likely to be 41 but we don't know for certain. That's gonna depend on how many more type B's are out there and the record of the teams losing them.

Likely a couple spots lower than 41, I believe...I'd forgotten about Carl Pavano and Grant Balfour (though Pavano might re-sign with Minny) and four Type-B guys Pedro Feliciano (Mets), Adam LaRoche/Aaron Heilman (D-Backs), and Trevor Hoffman (Brewers) all received and declined arb offers, and all are likely to sign major league contracts. #46 is probably the most likely spot, which would leave us with #23, #35, #46, and then probably somewhere in the vicinity of #55, #58ish, and (for the moment) the Angels pick around #75. I think. Probably just best to wait a few weeks, because, I have no end of trouble trying to track this stuff.

**** your asterisk.

You know, 5 mil per for 3 years is a bargain for Downs. The guy's been great for 4 straight years, and there's no reason to think that he can't be great for 3 more. I feel that this is a blunder for AA.

A blunder for AA as much as every other GM that didn't sign him. Those two picks are too valuable to have re-signed him anyway. It'll be interesting to see how all of the draft picks get sorted out. Gotta cross our fingers that no other Type As sign with the Angels. Shoulda told Frasor that if he accepted arb he'd be shipped off to Pittsburgh or something, haha
